Neveruseanyoilorpetroleumbasedcleaners(WD40,citrusbased cleanersandmanyautomotivedegreasers)onthebaseofaheat sink.Theoil,whichisengineeredtonotevaporate,fillsinthe microscopicvalleysinthemetalandsignificantlyreducesthe effectivenessofanysubsequentlyappliedthermalcompound. 3. Cleanthematingsurfacescompletelywithalowresidualsolvent (Highpurityisopropylalcoholoracetone)andaLINTFREEcloth. Ifthermalcompoundwaspreviouslyappliedtotheheatsink,the mountingsurfaceshouldbethoroughlyscrubbedandcleanedwith aXylenebasedcleaner,(GoofOffandsomecarburetorcleaners) acetone,mineralspirits,or99%pureisopropylalcohol.Itis importanttokeepthesurfacesfreeofforeignmaterialsandNOTto touchthesurfaces(ahair,pieceoflint,andevendeadskincellscan significantlyaffectthethermalinterfacesperformance).Inaddition, oilsfromyourfingerscanadverselyaffecttheperformanceby preventingthemicronizedsilverfillfromdirectlycontactingthe metalsurface.
