First Semester 2013-2014 Instruction Division Course Handout (Part II)

Date: 02/08/2013 In addition to Part I (General Handout for all courses appended to the Time Table), this portion gives further specific details regarding the course. 1.Course No. 2.Course Title 3.Instructor Incharge 4.Course Description This is a fundamental course on Materials Science and Engineering. It deals with the engineering materials like metals, polymers, ceramics and composites. Basic structure of materials from atomic level to microstructure level along with the influence of these structural parameters on mechanical, thermal and other properties, lattice structure and dislocations, phase diagrams will be discussed. Selection of materials for different applications, properties and performance degradation of materials in service will be analysed. 5.Scope and Objectives This course aims to provide the relation between structure and properties of materials, understanding of different engineering materials such as metals, alloys, polymers, ceramics and composites from the viewpoint of applications, properties, characterisations and performance improvements. 6.Prescribed Text Book Callister William D & R.
