Unit: Establishing Classroom Norms and Procedures Learning Target: Come to discussions prepared and follow rules for collegial discussions Define individual roles as needed Pose questions and comment with relevant ideas and acknowledge new information expressed by others Opening Activity: Peer-to-peer review of the common procedures for entering class. Daily lesson: Class discussion of common procedures regarding materials, class activities, and dismissal. Closing Activity: Introduction to part 1 of the This I Believe Educational Philosophy Essay. HW: This I Believe Philosophy Prewrite, Part I: Introduction assigned. Questions 1-7 due tomorrow. Upcoming deadlines Supplies, Parent Contact Form, and Film Permission Slip all due Friday 8/30. Unit: Establishing our Writing and Language Notebook Learning Target: Prepare a journal in which students can address the following targets: Write routinely over short and extended time frames Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, rewriting, editing, or trying a new approach. Demonstrate command of the rules of English grammar Opening Activity: Introduction to part 2 of the This I Believe Philosophy prewrite. Daily lesson: Introduce the purpose of the Writers Notebook and review requirements. Students work to complete notebooks. Closing Activity: Review the requirements for the journal cover HW: This I Believe Philosophy Prewrite, Part 2: Ethics assigned. Questions 8-13 due Wednesday/Thursday block. Unit: Plot and Conflict Learning Target: Identify and analyze the stages of plot and types of conflict Understand how stories are driven by plot, conflict, and point of view. Opening Activity: Introduction to the McDougal Littell Pre-Assessment using the Test-taking Handbook R95-R101. Daily lesson: Unit 1 Pre-Assessment on Plot and Conflict. Areas of focus include: reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing, and grammar. Closing Activity: Assigned PBS lessons. Introduce parts 3 and 4 of the This I Believe Philosophy Statement prewrite. HW: This I Believe Philosophy Prewrite, Part 3: Educational History, and Part 4: Literacy History assigned. Questions 8-19 due Friday. Unit: Plot and Conflict Learning Target: By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poems at the high end of the grades 6-8 text complexity band independently and proficiently Opening Activity: Silent Sustained Reading (15 minutes) Daily lesson: Introduce the SSR Independent Reading Project and corresponding deadlines Minimum goal of 2,000 pages of outside reading by the end of the year. Due date 1: 112 pages due on Friday, 9/6. Complete Unit 1 Pre-Assessment as needed. Closing Activity: Introduce part 5 of the This I Believe Philosophy prewrite. HW: This I Believe Philosophy Prewrite, Part 5: Future Aspirations assigned. Questions 27-31 due Tuesday 9/3 due to Labor Day Holiday.
