4- PROPOSAL SUMMARY
Title of the Project
Effect of aging treatment on microstructure and martensitic transformation
and magnetic properties of NiGaFeTi smart shape memory alloys
Principal Investigator: Dr. Nader El-Bagoury
Name of the College: Science
Name of the Department: Chemistry
Heat treatment processes like annealing, solution and quenching, homogenization, and ageing
affect the microstructure, phase transformations, mechanical and physical properties of alloys.
The heat treatment process factors are the applied temperature and the duration of time for the
heating cycle as well as cooling rate after heat treatment process using water or air or cooling
inside used furnace. Using different temperatures and also variant times, volume fraction of
different phases in the microstructure, martensitic phase transformation temperature, mechanical
properties such as hardness and tensile strength and physical properties like magnetic properties
will be influenced and investigated. In this study, a combination of heat treatment processes;
homogenization, solution and ageing treatments will be accomplished for the Ni-Ga-Fe-Ti shape
memory alloys to find out the changes can be occurred for the its microstructure, phase
transformations, martensitic-austenitic reaction temperature and magnetization.
Ferromagnetic Shape Memory Alloys (FMSMAs) have drawn much attention as promising
magnetic actuator materials, since magnetic-field- induced strains (MFISs) as larger as several
percent were found in Ni2MnGa Heusler alloys. Some new Hueslr alloys such as Co-Ni-Al, Co-NiGa and Ni-Fe-Ga were explored up to now some other alloy systems have also been developed as
FMSMA candidates, such as Fe-Co-Ni-Ti, Fe-Pt, Fe-Pd, Co-Ni as well as two Co=based ternary
alloys, i.e Huesler-type Co2NiGa and Co-Ni-Al (B=2 structure) alloys. The occurrence of MFIS can
be attributed to two actuation mechanisms. One is the magnetic-field-induced martensite
transformation from the parent phase, and another is the magnetic-field-induced reversible
redistribution of martensite twin variants. In general the former needs a huge magnetic field, e.g.
in Fe-Co-Ni-Ti systems, and the latter is responsible for the large MFIS to Ni 2MnGa Heusler alloys
under a moderate magnetic field. The MFIS formed due to the latter actuation mechanism has
been well described by a phenomenological model with such parameters as Zeeman energy,
magnetic anisotropy energy, an internal elastic energy and an external stress.
Similar to Ni2MnGa alloy, other Heusler alloys with a reversible martensitic transformation may
also possess the capability of MIFS. A very recent study on Ni 54Ga27Fe19 alloy has demonstrated the
Ni-Fe-Ga alloy as a Heusler-type FMSMA.
The most important problem of Ni-Mn-Ga alloys to be used in practical engineering fields is how
to increase the martensitic transformation temperatures, that is, the operating temperature must
increase. Progress is being made in this direction. The main method is to adjust the alloys
compositions. For the newly-explored Huesler alloys, few researchers have been conducted and
they are still not sufficient for designing alloys with proper martensitic transformation
temperatures.
In this research, the effects of ageing heat treatment process on the martensitic transformation
5
and microstructure of Ni-Ga-Fe-Ti smart shape memory
alloys will be investigated. Additionally,
influence of heat treatment variables such as temperature and time on magnetic properties of NiGa-Fe-Ti will be studied as well.

The process of heat treating is the method by which metals are heated and cooled in a series of
specific operations that never allow the metal to reach the molten state. The purpose of heat
treating is to make a metal more useful by changing or restoring its mechanical properties.
Through heat treating, we can make a metal harder, stronger, and more resistant to impact.
Also, heat treating can make a metal softer and more ductile. The one disadvantage is that no
heat- treating procedure can produce all of these characteristics in one operation. Some
properties are improved at the expense of others; for example, hardening a metal may make it
brittle.
The various types of heat-treating processes are similar because they all involve the heating
and cooling of metals; they differ in the heating temperatures and the cooling rates used and
the final results. Most nonferrous metals can be homogenized, annealed, solutions, aged but
never tempered, normalized, or case- hardened.
STAGES OF HEAT TREATMENT
Heat treating is accomplished in three major stages:
Stage l: Heating the metal slowly to ensure a uniform temperature.
Stage 2: Soaking (holding) the metal at a given temperature for a given time and cooling
the metal to room temperature.
Stage 3: Cooling the metal to room temperature.
Most documented studies exploring the aging effect on shape memory alloys have been
associated with AuCd [1], CuAlNi [2] and TiNi systems [39]. These studies can essentially
be classified into two major categories: martensite aging effect and aging-induced
precipitation.
The first category provides a means to understand the rubber-like behavior and martensite
stabilization with respect to the change in Af/As by martensite aging (aging at < As) [13]. The
other category explores the precipitation process as well as the effect of precipitates on
martensitic transformation behavior or the shape memory effect [49]. However, few relevant
studies on aging have been documented for FSMAs [1013], and those that have are
inadequate. Our previous work on Mn2NiGa alloys has demonstrated that aging cannot only
provide an alternative way to enhance magnetization but can also induce Mn-rich
precipitates within a certain temperature range [1, 14].
In conventional shape memory alloys (SMAs), which are paramagnetic, the martensitic
transformation underlying the shape memory effect is induced by changes in temperature or
stress or both. The same transformation in ferromagnetic shape memory alloys (FSMAs) can
be triggered not only by changes in temperature and stress, but also by changes in the applied
magnetic field. Therefore, it has attracted much attention as high performance solid-state

actuator materials. Many FSMAs systems have been developed from Heusler alloy system,
such as Ni2MnGa [15-18], Ni2MnAl [19], Co-Ni-Ga (Al) [20, 21], and Ni-Fe-Ga [22, 23].
There have been many reports on their structure, magnetic properties, martensitic
transformation, magnetically controlled shape memory effect, super plasticity and magneticfield-induced strains (MFIS).
Shape memory alloys have the ability to perform both sensing and actuating functions. As
commercial functional materials, TiNi and Cu-based SMAs have been applied in mechanical,
electronic, medical and dental areas etc. [24, 25]. The operating temperatures of most SMAs
depend on their themo-elastic martensitic transformation (MT) temperatures. The MT
temperatures of TiNi and Cu-based alloys are below 150C, so the devices made with SMAs
can only be applied in low temperatures [26, 27]. Many applications, such as aircraft and space
industry, automobile industry, oil and gas exploration, and nuclear industry etc., require a
shape memory transformation temperature between 150 and 400C with structural stability
when heated for long periods up to 600C [28]. Therefore, it is necessary to develop SMAs that
have the high MT temperatures and the good stability of the microstructure, the mechanical
properties and the shape memory behavior over a long time at elevated temperature. A
number of alloy systems have exhibited transformation temperatures at or above 150C,
showing promise as high-temperature SMAs. These include alloys of the TiNiPd(Pt, Hf) [29,
30], RuTa(Nb) [31, 32] and NiAl-based [33, 34] systems. Among these alloys, NiGaFe alloy has
high thermal conductivity, good high temperature strength, and excellent oxidation and
corrosion resistance. Furthermore, it has the shape memory effect (SME), high transformation
temperatures, and low cost, and is a potential high temperature SMA [35].
Heusler alloys have attracted much attention for their unique potential as actuators in
microelectromechanical systems [36], especially Ni-Mn-Ga, in which a magnetic-field-induced
strain up to 6% has been reported [37]. Subsequently, some new Heusler alloys, such as Co-NiAl, Co-Ni-Ga and Ni-Fe-Ga were explored [38, 39].
Recently, Oikawa et al. have found the Ni-Ga-Fe alloys to be promising FSMA candidates [40,
41]. According to their study, the parent phase with the B2 and /or the L2 1 structure
martensitically transforms into a seven-layer modulated structure (14M) and a five-layer
modulated (10M) structure up on cooling. More recently, some additional investigations have
been reported. However the atomic and magnetic orderings and the martensitic
transformations in the Ni-Ga-Fe B2 phase alloys have not been reported yet. The atomic
ordering that associated with the transformation of B2 to L2 1 and the martensitic
transformation from L21 to the modulated layer 14M and/or 10M revealed that the shape
memory effect take place in the ferromagnetic state.
