Wheelers Grading & Academic Policies Students, please keep this in your binder so that you can refer

it as necessary. These policies will apply all year and you will be expected to know them and follow them. Submitting papers
I will not accept papers via email. Please plan ahead to avoid printer issues. 1) Thank you for your cooperation. The only exception will be if I specify that a particular project should be submitted electronically. All major assignments are due on the assigned date. To be considered on time, the assignment must be turned in at the beginning of class. Please do not plan on finishing up/printing/etc during class time. 1) This does include absent days, since the original due date was given in advance. If you have an excused absence the day an assessment is due, you must turn the assignment in the next day you are at school. 2) Students who do not complete work on time will still be able to turn in an assessment to meet the designated standard, but they should expect the following: The highest score a student may receive is a three (3); Students have one week to turn in the original assessment; After one week, the student will have to complete a different assessment (read another novel, write on a different subject, etc.) This does indeed mean additional work. Formal essays can be revised for one month after they have been returned under the following conditions: 1) You have turned in all other assignmentsno zeros in the gradebook, (yes, even work that is merely practice). 2) The assignment to be redone was turned in on time. 3) You meet with me, outside of class time, to discuss changes before revising. This means you take initiative to make genuine improvements to your writing; you understand you are doing more than simply correcting conventions errors; you seek out improvement on your own and do not simply ask me what to do. Reading quizzes will be given periodically to ensure that you are reading and understanding our required texts. If you are unprepared or score below a 3: 1) Complete a quiz retake form, which includes a detailed summary, 3 MVPs (most valuable passages), and a detailed analysis of each passage. 2) You must submit all quiz make ups BEFORE the end-of-unit assessment. 3) The highest attainable score on the quiz retake form will be a 3. Failed end-of-unit assessments must be made up this way: 1) Complete and submit a Failed Assessment Reflection form and test corrections, if applicable. 2) Make a plan, to be approved by me (outside of class) to demonstrate that you have proficiency in the appropriate standards. This may include an additional essay or a brand new assessment. 3) You must submit this work within 2 weeks of initial notification of failure. 1) Talk to me before or after class. 2) If this doesnt work, please write me a note and I will visit with you when it is convenient.

Estacada High School English Department Standards-Based Grading Policy Fall Semester 2013-14 The EHS English Department adheres to the school-wide Standards-Based Grading Policy. The following document reflects how the school-wide policy is put into practice in the English Department. All graded assignments are on a four (4) point scale. Some assignments are for practice only and are not scored. Students must score a three (3) or higher to meet a specific standard. Each standard for the class must be met with a three (3) or higher in order to pass the course. Students may improve scores on assessments that do not meet the standard (less than a three (3)). There are conditions to this, as outlined below. Assessments are due on the date set by the teacher. Major assessments in the English Department, such as lengthy papers, unit tests on novels, and speeches, have a very specific due date. Students who do not turn work in on the due date or say, Im not ready for the test may still turn in an assessment to meet the designated standard with the following possible recourses: a) the highest score a student may receive is a three (3); b) the student may have to complete a different assessment (read another novel, write on a different subject, etc.) This would be additional work. c) Students in Honors and AP courses should expect both of these actions. All standards must be met by the end of the semester to pass a class. There will be no work made up after the end of the semester.1 Per EHS policy, students with an excused absence on the day an assessment is due must complete the assessment (or turn it in) the next day they are at school. With teacher permission, the first Friday after a students return would also be allowable. If a student is absent more than one day, then the student has the number of days absent to complete the assigned work. This policy does not apply to tests, exams, or major projects that are scheduled five (5) days in advance. In such a case, the teachers professional judgment will determine when the student must complete the workit may still be the original due date. Students who do not meet specific standards on a given assessment MUST attend a Friday Flex session when her/his English teacher assigns a specific session to attend. Students who do not attend an assigned, designated Friday Flex Session will be disciplined according to the school-wide attendance policy and: a) the highest score a student may receive on the assessment is a three (3); b) the student may have to complete a different assessment (read another novel, write on a different subject, etc.) This would be additional work. Students should communicate often with their English teacher. Students may request additional time to complete an assessment ONLY if the following conditions are met:

SPED, 504, or ELL students may have additional time to the extent written in their i ndividualized plans. (A teachers professional judgment may also be reason for additional time see page 2.)

a) the student requests more time three (3) school days before the due date b) the student has a legitimate reason for the request; c) the student is showing progress toward completion; and d) the teacher feels that the student has been diligently on-task. Ultimately, it is the teachers professional judgment that will be the deciding factor if the student receives additional time. If additional time is granted by the teacher, the teacher will set a new specific due date. Students on an IEP or 504 plan that need additional time should request additional time that is consistent with their plan. Students who receive a score that meets the standard (3 or higher) may complete another assessment to earn a higher score for a particular learning standard. In most cases, the teacher will require the student to meet individually with the teacher for individualized instruction for improvement before the student makes a second attempt to improve an already-passing grade.
