Faramir (Ranger) - Painting Guide.

How to paint Faramir from the Captured by Gondor boxset. Introduction This is a painting guide for the Faramir miniature that is included in the 'Captured by Gondor' boxset. I recently put together a diorama featuring Faramir and his Rangers and used the opportunity to put a guide together for the Faramir miniature used in the scene. I should point out that the Faramir I use in this guide has had a conversion on his Sword arm, but this will not effect the paint guide.

Step 1 - Cleaning The Miniature

Please help us to keep your community thriving.

As with all miniatures, the first step is to thoroughly clean it up. First of all, make sure you thoroughly wash the miniature in soapy water. This will remove the residue that is left from the casting process when the miniature is made. Next, remove any Flash Metal with a needle file.

Step 2 - Basecoating
Once the miniature has been thoroughly cleaned up, spray the entire figure with Chaos Black. Leave this to dry and then give it another coat. Once the second coat has dried, touch up any missed sections with Chaos Black paint.

Step 3 - The Eyes

My usual first step when it comes to painting the actual miniature is to do the eyes. A lot of people have problems doing this, therefore I have changed the way I usually do this to try and help the members that struggle with this process. Basically, I have no problem painting very small areas and usually paint the eyes straight in with no touch up work afterwards, however, this process should make it easier for thos who struggle with it. Dip the very tip of a small brush (I suggest a 000 or a 0000) into some Skull White. Position the miniature so you are comfortable with it and gently flood the eye socket area with Skull White. Dont worry if you make a mistake or if the eyes look too big, we can put that right soon. let the Skull White dry and then dip the 'very' tip of your brush into some Regal Blue. Move your brush into place slowly, aiming for the centre of the eye and keep going forward until contact is made. At this point remove the brush and repeat on the second eye socket.

Step 4 - The Skin

Now use Dark Flesh to cover the entire facial area. During this, use the opportunity to carefully reduce the size of the eye. Once the Dark Flesh has dried, use Dwarf Flesh to highlight the raised areas of the face, however leave the bearded section Dark Flesh. Once this coat has dried, highlight the uppermost sections (bridge of nose, eyebrows and cheeks) with Elf Flesh.

Step 5 - The Beard

Next, use some Snakebite Leather and carefully paint a basecoat around the beared area and leave to dry. Now choose Desert Yellow and highlight the beard by using thin vertical stripes.

Step 6 - Breast Plate & Sleeves

Use some watered-down Mithril Silver to fill the White Tree emblem on Faramirs chest. Once the Mithril has dried, carefully paint aroung the tree and the rest of the breast plate with Dark Flesh. Highlight the breast plate with Terracotta and basecoat the sleeves with Scorched Brown. Lastly, paint the under-sleeves with Desert Yellow.

Step 7 - Cloak & Skirt

Basecoat Faramirs cloak and skirt with Catachan Green and leave to dry. Once dry, drybrush the cloak with a Catachan and Camo Green mix. Highlight the skirt with watered down Camo Green by painting vertical stripes.

Step 8 - Boots, Gloves & Hair

Basecoat the boots and gloves with Scorched Brown and leave to dry. Once dry, highlight with Bestial Brown. Basecoat the hair with Snakebite Leather and leave to dry. Highlight in exactly the same fashion as the Beard.

Step 9 - The Sword

To finish off, drybrush the sword heavily with a Chaos Black and Codex Grey mix. Once dry, give it a lighter drybrush with Fortress Grey and finally with a light drybrush of Skull White. Lastly, paint some straight highlights on with Skull White.

Step 10 - The Bow, Cuffs Quiver and Arrows

Highlight the very edge of the bow and cuffs with a Codex Grey and Chaos Black mix. Paint the arrow flights Skull White and use 4 spots of Bestial Brown directly on top to represent the top of the arrow shafts. Paint the quiver Scorched Brown and drybrush with Dark Flesh. Paint the quiver strapping Chaos Black. And that about finishes things off. Hope you enjoyed the article and are happy with the results.
