MIND MAGICK NOTES I: Psychophysics, Gnosis, and The Void

Gustav Theodor Fechner coined the term "psychophysics", developing a theory that
could relate matter to the mind, by describing the relationship between the world
and the way it is perceived. Psychophysics links the physical properties of
stimuli and a person's experience of them. This, then, promotes the concept of a
causal relationship in regards to perception and reaction.

Stimulus-A is seen for the first time. Informavtion of that stimulus - it's color,
it's shape, etc - is recorded by the eyes and transmitted throughout the brain.
The response to this stimulus depends on its nature. What it looks like and how it
relates conceptually to its environment creates for the stimulus a context by
which it is understood.

Any sensory system must have the ability to detect varying degrees of energy in
the environment: light, sound, chemical, or mechanical stimulation. How much of a
stimulus is necessary for you to see, hear, taste, smell, or feel something? The
absolute threshold represents the minimum amount of energy that a person can
detect. When the energy of a stimulus falls below this absolute threshold, we
cannot detect its presence; when the energy of the stimulus rises above the
absolute threshold, we can detect the stimulus.

The basis that surrounds the psychological concept the of absolute threshold
represents ideally the gnostic practice. Excitatory gnosis falls above the
absolute threshold where inhibitory gnosis falls below. There is a point at which
we experience total lack of perception in regards to detecting specific stimulus.
Below the threshold of energy perception exists the Void – a state of total
nothingness.
