CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s): 11.10 Students analyze the development of federal civil rights and voting rights. *Examine the roles of civil rights advocates (e.g., A. Philip Randolph, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcom X, Thurgood Marshall, James Farmer, Rosa Parks), including the significance of Martin Luther King, Jr.s Letter from Birmingham Jail and I Have a Dream speech. 11.11 Students analyze the major social problems and domestic policy issues in Contemporary American society.

Big Ideas:

How did major civil rights movements and laws affect modern U.S society? Why were people afraid of change of change? How did people resist change, in regards to landmark supreme court rulings? How did the actions of individuals lead to nationwide movement for change?

Unit Goals and Objectives: Student Learning Objectives:

Students will identify the historic violations of human rights in regards to social and legal discrimination. Students will describe how the media helped spark public awareness and activism for civil rights. Students will describe how the Civil Rights Movement has influenced modern U.S society. Students will be able to identify the benefits and challenges of diversity in American life.

Unit Summary:

The Civil Rights Movement strived for social change in the United States. The goal was to outlaw racial discrimination. The movement characterized by major campaigns of civil resistance, in attempt for equality. In the 1950s and 60s civil disobedience created a climate of hostility between racist southerners, local, state and federal governments. We will examine landmark supreme court decisions, laws, leaders, conflicting ideologies between organizers, civil disobedience the role of the media and how the practice of segregation, embedded racism, and laws created a society that fostered hate, intolerance and violence and resisted change. After the lecture, I will use Quizlet (Flash Cards) it is a good way of familiarizing students with the words used with in the Unit. During the lecture, students will work in groups and answer critical thinking questions. The questions will allow students to explore different interpretations of course material with each. I will have one person be the group speaker and have them explain their answer. Finally, students (groups of 3) will create a PowerPoint on a specific person or event within the topic. It will be a great way of assessing how well students can put into practice the skills they learned with the websercise activity, group discussions, and most importantly it will allow them to demonstrate how well they could incorporate various sources into one project. It will serve as a good review for the exam. The unit exam will be a blend of multiple choice, fill in answers, and short answer questions. I will incorporate some of the CST questions into the exam, to evaluate if I met the CA contend standards successfully.
Assessment Plan: Entry-Level: Survey Monkey Knowledge Test Formative: Multiple choice questions and discussion questions to evaluate if students are learning the material and group work that involves critical thinking. Summative: Students (groups of 3) will create a PowerPoint on a specific person or event within the topic. It will be a great way of assessing how well students can put

into practice the skills they learned with the websercise activity, group discussions, and most importantly it will allow them to demonstrate how well they could incorporate various sources into one project. It will serve as a good review for the exam. The unit exam will be a blend of multiple choice, fill in answers, and short answer questions. Students will be able to identify the benefits and challenges of diversity in American life Acceptable Evidence: -Students will demonstrate that they are able to interpret and analyze MLK speech and how the media selected certain parts of the speech in order for it to become the I have a dream speech. -Students will discuss and take notes on how the diverse masses interpreted the movement. Lesson Activities: Teacher will present lesson plan via an online presentation tool. Guided notes will aid students as a point of reference and reflection. Group work that will allow students to collaborate with classmates. Group Presentation that will be used to evaluate students ability to interpret and analyze primary sources.

Lesson 2 Student Learning Objective: Students will describe how the Civil Rights Movement has impacted modern U.S society. Students will be able to identify the benefits and challenges of diversity in American life Lesson 3 Student Learning Objective: Students will identify the historic violations of human rights in Acceptable Evidence: Webquest Students will answer 8 questions that require them to use multiple content related articles from different websites Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Presentation Organization Interaction
Lesson Activities: Teacher will navigate online sources and pick articles and websites that are related to the content matter and appropriate. Teacher will create a worksheet with links to sites and ask specific question about each site. Students will participate in a online scavenger hunt which will allow them to navigate the web in order to find answers. The links of websites provided will help students in conducting future research

Acceptable Evidence: Students will complete a graphic organizer
