Spiritual Principle: He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to Him, nothing in His appearance that we should desire Him. (Isaiah 53:2b) Objective: Students will describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text. These might include actions, thoughts or words. (RL.4.3) Suggested Activities and Experiences: 1. Assess students knowledge of characters 2. Review characters, settings, compare main and secondary items in stories. 3. Define and discuss descriptive words. What parts of speech are descriptive words frequently? 4. Where do you commonly find these describers in a sentence? Describers may be clues to help find details. 5. Describe a main character from any story. Write down your details in list form. 6. Model how to find evidence in text. On page 54 consider question 14, what does Ali Baba Bernstein learn from the other David Bersteins? Where should I look? Several comments were made by the other Davids and can be found in the story. How did you find them? What did they look like? What clues can be found or implied? (Implied will be used as a definition for students to prepare for inferences in further lessons.) 7. Review your character description, what clues did you use? Are there any more you might have missed? 8. Repeat activity on another day emphasizing settings or events in place of character. 9. Worksheet page 23 in students workbook for story elements. 10. Partner Sharing: Share the attributes of your character without telling the character. Were the clues you gave strong enough to help your partner guess your character? 11. Assess and evaluate progress with teacher created post assessment

Evaluation Procedures: Check student worksheets
