Pressure and Wind Movements

(winters)

Months- December - February

During this season high pressure prevails over the northern plains. North-east trade winds prevail over the country. They blow from land to sea over most part of the country and hence the dry season.
Trade Winds

In the north-eastern part of the country a feeble high pressure area is developed. Light winds with a low velocity of about 3-5 kms per hour begin to blow outwards. By and large the topography of the region influences the wind direction. They

are westerly or north westerly down the Ganga Valley. They become northerly in the Ganga-Brahmaputra delta. Free from the influence of topography they are clearly north-easterly over the Bay of Bengal. Another phenomena are the western disturbances.

Western Disturbances

Western disturbances
The fine weather conditions at regular intervals get disturbed by shallow cyclic depressions. Also known as western disturbances, they originate in the Mediterranean and cross over west Asia , Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan before reaching the north western parts of the country. On the way their moisture content gets augmented from the Caspian sea in the north and the Persian gulf in the south. These disturbances cause light rainfall in the north western parts of India in the states of Punjab, Haryana & Himachal Pradesh. Although the amount is less even then it is good for the winter crop especially wheat. January Pressure Belts
