Welcome back to SchoolTerm 3

Teachers: Melinda Westbrook & Lindy Kelvin
Welcome back to Term 3. We hope you had a relaxing holiday and enjoyed the time with your family. During our first week, the students reflected on last semester and have written down their goals for this coming semester. All Year 5 students have identified the things they do well in the classroom and the areas that they feel need improvement. We are working cooperatively with the children to help them achieve their academic, social and personal goals. We encourage and support the students in developing greater independence and will focus on problem solving, positive communication and social skill development this term. Homework This term Year 5 students will be focusing on Reading Comprehension and practising Times Tables for Homework. Each week students will be given a reading comprehension activity to take home to read with an adult. Please assist your child in answering the questions related to the text. To assist students in the classroom Maths activities such as division, fractions and algebra, weekly times table practice will also be sent home. Learning times tables is a necessity and one of the foundation skills that children should grasp during primary school. Please support your child at home with regular times table www.room17home.weebly.com practice.

PREMIERS READING CHALLENGE

The Premiers Reading Challenge finishes at the end of August. Students are to record the eight books they have read from the Premiers Reading List. They also need to read four other books to add to their list. To avoid disappointment, please encourage your child to complete their reading for the challenge.

Science: Liquids, Solids & Gases

Many thanks to Naomi Kuchel, East Adelaide mum and High School Maths/Science teacher for volunteering her time to support our Science investigations. Both Year 5 classes were very fortunate to participate in a very engaging science lesson using liquid nitrogen to show that liquids, solids and gases have different observable properties and behave in different ways. We are looking forward to the Potions experiments presented by all Year 5 students in the coming weeks.

Excursions & Events

Orienteering
The Year 5s had an active start to the term by taking part in Orienteering at Botanic Park. On our first day back to school we walked down to Botanic Park to meet our volunteer instructor, John Such, who designed an orienteering course for our students. He instructed the children in the skills needed to navigate the course. Many students showed great skill in completing the course in a competitive time frame. Several Year 5 students were invited to participate in the Orienteering Championships in Week 3 and which resulted in East Adelaide School winning its 18th Orienteering School Championship for 2013! Well done everyone!

Swimming
Week two was also busy with swimming lessons. The children took part in daily swimming activities to help them learn about water safety and improve their swimming skills and techniques. It has been wonderful to see the everyone developing new friendships within their swimming groups. We would also like to add that weve received positive feedback from the swimming instructors about both the attitude and behaviour of East Adelaide students during their lessons!
I thought that it was fun! She did really good impressions and accents! Brianna Rm 17

Author Visit: Jacqueline Harvey

On Wednesday, August 7th both Year 5 classes were very thrilled to meet and speak with best selling author, Jacqueline Harvey. Ms Harvey is the writer of two well known book series: Alice-Miranda and Clementine Rose. The author visit was hosted by the St. Peters Public Library on behalf of the May Gibbs Childrens Literature Trust. The Library would love to see more East Adelaide students using their facility and encourages the entire community to come in and check out their latest renovation project.
I thought the author visit was really funny and entertaining especially when she would break into her characters voices! Lily Rm 17
