Library Renovations Over winter break Barton Colleges Library underwent some major changes under the orders

of former library director, Rodney Lippard; from the removal of the old circulation desk to the relocation of furniture and book collections. When visitors first walk into the library they will notice that the offices behind the check out desk are gone and that there is more open space for student to work. The idea behind the controlled chaos is to make better use of space in the library and to make it easier for library patrons to distinguish between the reference desk and circulation desk service areas, enabling library faculty/staff to provide better service, said Ann Dolman, Outreach and Public Service librarian. A person will also notice that the help desk has been moved from the front of the library, so you can see it when you first walk in, to the back of the library next to reference books. And the circulation supervisors office that was smack-dab in the middle of the circulation/ reference area was relocated to an existing office. Furniture has also been moved, for example the coaches that were next to the classroom are now behind the circulation desk. According to Dolman, some of the casual seating areas will be relocated to reduce noise traveling up the stairs to the second floor Quiet Zone; some of the individual study carrels

will be moved; and eventually, the student computers downstairs will be shifted to different columns. Also, different collections have been moved to make more space for students. As a result of the recently-pared Audiovisual Collection moving to the far side of the reference stacks, there will be more free space for collaborative study areas in the middle of the first floor surrounding the circulation/reference desk, said Dolman. Another couple of collections that have already been relocated include the Paperback Book Exchange, which has been moved to the vending machine room off the Learning Caf, and the new ISSR Library of 224 volumes, which has been moved near the stairs to temporarily occupy the former space of the Paperback Exchange collection. Students who have been in the library since its new makeover have made several comments. Teresa Hilton, a sophomore said, I like that it gives me more space to work on projects and homework. Allison Peedin, a senior said, I was surprised when I walked in the library and found that a lot of things had been moved.
