his year the Waipara Wine & Food Festival held in the Glenmark Church grounds was a buzzing atmosphere of people who tasted fine food, wine and were entertained by groups of musicians on a sunny Saturday afternoon, perching on bales of straw, sitting on rugs or reclining on deck chairs. As soon as the gates opened at 11am, the festival was alive with people from near and far locals and tourists, friends and family, who were all treated to the very best food and wine on offer.
Peter Moody, Richard Crawford, Debbie Moody, Tony Howlett, Meghan Shelke and Kirsty McLellan, Isobel's Restaurant, Heritage Hanmer Springs.
The cafs and restaurants of the North Canterbury Food & Wine Trail created a winning formula of serving up dishes of gourmet food, matched with the local Waipara V alley wines. Dishes and matching Waipara V alley Wines from Seagars at Oxford, Two Rivers of Cheviot, Waipara Springs Winery & Caf and Isobels Restaurant of Heritage Hanmer Springs, were judged by international wine judge, Terry Copeland, along with Owen Black and Cris Lobos, actors with the Netherwood movie, currently being filmed in the Waipara region. The judges overwhelming agreement was for Waipara Springs passionfruit and sweet chilli mussels matched with Waipara Springs Riesling as the winning food and wine match. Highly commended was awarded to Isobels Restaurant & Bar of Heritage Hanmer Springs with a baked Karikaas aged gouda, pumpkin and ricotta cake, matched with Northfield Frog Rock Chardonnay.
State Highway 1, Waipara Ph 03 314 6777 Passionfruit and sweet chilli mussels served on a zucchini, parmesan and lemon fritter and topped with a chive and lemon crme fraiche matched with Waipara Springs Riesling.
Highly Commended
Throughout the day the North Canterbury Food & Wine Trail marquee served up their very popular dishes to a constant stream of people and a favourite was the chocolate brownie from Two Rivers, and Seagars at Oxfords home smoked fillet of Aoraki salmon.
