SUMMARY The s t u d y c a r r i e d o u t i n B e i j i n g , C h i n a i s c o n c e r n e d w i t h h u m a n e x p o s u r e to c a r b o n monoxide (CO) a n d r e s p i r a b l e p a r t i c u l a t e m a t t e r ( R P ) i n 1984-85. T h i s i s o n e o f t h e f o u r p i l o t s t u d i e s c a r r i e d o u t a s p a r t o f t h e WHO H e a l t h R e l a t e d M o n i t o r i n g P r o g r a m m e i n c o o p e r a t i o n w i t h t h e UNEP/GEMS P r o g r a m m e . Tw e n t y n o n - s m o k i n g v o l u n t e e r s f r o m t h e s t a f f o f t h e I n s t i t u t e o f H e a l t h were s e l e c t e d a c c o r d i n g t o t h e i r h o u s i n g c o n d i t i o n s a s t h e s u b j e c t s f o r t h e s t u d y. T h e o u t d o o r , i n d o o r a n d p e r s o n a l a i r e x p o s u r e w a s m o n i t o r e d s i m u l t a n e o u s l y d u r i n g o n e w e e k f o r e a c h s u b j e c t i n summer a n d i n w i n t e r , a n d a t t h e s a m e t i m e , a t s o m e common p u b l i c a r e a s , s u c h a s w o r k i n g , s h o p p i n g a n d t r a f f i c areas (persons t r a v e l l i n g on bike o r by bus) were also monitored. W i t h r e s p e c t t o CO m o n i t o r i n g , t h e a v e r a g e o u t d o o r c o n c e n t r a t i o n w a s 1 . 5 ppm i n s u m m e r a n d 3 . 9 p p m i n w i n t e r . I n d o o r s i t w a s 2 . 8 p p m i n s u m m e r a n d 20.0 ppm i n w i n t e r o n t h e a v e r a g e , t h e c o n c e n t r a t i o n b e i n g o v e r 1 0 0 p p m i n some c a s e s . P e r s o n a l e x p o s u r e f l u c t u a t e d b e t w e e n t h e o u t d o o r a n d i n d o o r values. T h e l e v e l o f COHb a v e r a g e d 0 . 2 % i n summer a n d 1 . 9 % i n w i n t e r i n d i c a t i n g t h a t t h e m a i n s o u r c e o f CO w a s p r o b a b l y d o m e s t i c h e a t i n g . Respirable p a r t i c u l a t e measurements w e r e a l s o h i g h e r i n w i n t e r , b u t n o t as p r o n o u n c e d a s C O , a n d t h e m a i n s o u r c e i s l i k e l y a s s o c i a t e d w i t h o u t d o o r conditions. The d i a r y t h a t w a s k e p t b y t h e v o l u n t e e r s s h o w e d t h e t i m e s p e n t a t h o m e was a b o v e 6 5 % a n d i n d o o r s o v e r 9 0 % . T h i s o b s e r v a t i o n u n d e r l i n e s t h e importance o f t h e s t u d i e s o n i n d o o r p o l l u t i o n and p e r s o n a l m o n i t o r i n g .

INTRODUCTION
In t h e p a s t a i r p o l l u t i o n assessment h a s m o s t l y been based o n t h e d a t a obtained f r o m ambient a i r m o n i t o r i n g n e t w o r k s . P e o p l e however s p e n d t h e greater p a r t o f t h e i r t i m e i n d o o r s . W i t h t h e development o f new a r c h i t e c t u r a l designs a n d b u i l d i n g m a t e r i a l s t h e a i r i n s i d e a n d o u t s i d e b u i l d i n g s i s completely s e p a r a t e d . I f v e n t i l a t i o n i s i n a d e q u a t e , p o l l u t i o n m a y r e a c h f a i r l y h i g h l e v e l s i n d o o r s . P e o p l e a r e becoming more and more aware t h a t t h e a i r p o l l u t i o n l e v e l s measured b y o u t s i d e m o n i t o r i n g s t a t i o n s may n o t r e p r e s e n t t h e t r u e e x p o s u r e f o r human b e i n g s .

I n t h e b e g i n n i n g many o f t h e q u e s t i o n n a i r e s h a d t o b e corrected a f t e r c h e c k i n g a n d e n q u i r y because some s u b j e c t s f a i l e d t o r e c o r d the d a i l y a c t i v i t i e s a s r e q u i r e d . L a t e r t h e s u b j e c t s w e r e a s k e d t o g i v e a simple b r e a k d o w n o f t i m e d i s t r i b u t i o n d i v i d e d i n t o f i v e c a t e g o r i e s : h o m e , wor k ing p l a c e , p u b l i c a r e a s i n s i d e , o u t d o o r a c t i v i t y a n d t i m e s p e n t i n t r a f f i c (by b i k e o r b y b u s s e p a r a t e l y ) . I n t h i s w a y t i m e w a s s a v e d a n d , a t t h e same time, more accurate r e s u l t s were obtained.

F o r a leakage t e s t 10 p l a s t i c bags were f i l l e d w i t h a n a i r / C O m i x t u r e o f k n o w n c o n c e n t r a t i o n . T h e c o n c e n t r a t i o n o f CO was t h e n d e t e r m i n e d p e r i o d i c a l l y a t d i f f e r e n t t i m e s d u r i n g s i x d a y s . T h e r e s u l t s s h o w t h a t t h e CO c o n c e n t r a t i o n s i n b a g s r e m a i n unchanged d u r i n g s i x days, t h e r e f o r e t h e p o l y c h l o r o e t h y l e n e p l a s t i c b a g s a r e s u i t a b l e f o r u s e a s CO samplers.

D I S C U S S I O N In recent years health-related studies o n indoor a i r p o l l u t i o n have been carried o u t i n China i n a number o f c i t i e s b y medical c o l l e g e s o r research institutes. S e v e r a l papers have been published a s follows: "The e ff e c t o f smoking o n i n d o o r a i r p o l l u t i o n " ( 9 ) , " R e s e a r c h o n t h e e f f e c t o f s m o k i n g o n human C O H b a n d b o d y f l u i d i m m u n e l e v e l " ( 8 ) , M u t a g e n i c i t y t e s t o f a i r p o l l u t a n t s f r o m indoor and outdoor" ( 4 ) , " T h e r e l a t i o n s h i p between l u n g cancer and i n d o o r a i r p o l l u t i o n i n h i g h i n c i d e n c e l u n g c a n c e r a r e a s , X i a n W e i C o u n t y " (1), a n d " T h e p r i m a r y measurement o f i n d o o r a i r p o l l u t i o n i n t h e s u b u r b s o f Xining where d r y manure i s u e d a s f u e l " ( 2 ) . S o m e surveys i n t h i s f i e l d a r e also undertaken b y l o c a l a n t i - e p i d e m i c s t a t i o n s . T h e c o n c e n t r a t i o n s o b t a i n e d f r o m f i x e d m o n i t o r i n g s t a t i o n s o u t d o o r s do n o t r e p r e s e n t v e r y a c c u r a t e l y t h e p e r s o n a l e x p o s u r e . F o r C O a c l o s e correlation w a s observed between p e r s o n a l exposure a n d t h e d o m e s t i c environment. T h e m a i n s o u r c e o f R P i s f r o m o u t d o o r s , b u t i s i n f l u e n c e d b y seasonal d i f f e r e n c e s . T h e l e v e l o f RP m o n i t o r e d o u t s i d e a l s o d o e s n o t r e f l e c t the p e r s o n a l exposure. People i n B e i j i n g s p e n d m o r e t h a n 90% o f t i m e i n d o o r s w h e t h e r i n w i n t e r o r i n s u m m e r. T h i s u n d e r s c o r e s t h e i m p o r t a n c e o f s t u d i e s o n i n d o o r a i r pollution and personal monitoring. P e r s o n a l exposure t o a i r pollutants calculated f r o m t i m e weighted averages i s q u i t e a c c u r a t e i f r e l i a b l e a n d representative monitoring d a t a a r e a v a i l a b l e f o r p u b l i c areas. T h i s approach i s f o u n d t o be a s i m p l e and u s e f u l approach t o c a l c u l a t e personal exposure.
