Name: Emma Gustafson Grade: Preschool Name of Learning Center/Source: Patterns and More!

Myself Standard: Patterns functions and algebra Benchmark: B. Extend sequences of sounds and shapes or simple number patterns, and create and record similar patterns. Grade Level Indicator: Identify, copy, extend and create simple patterns or sequences of sounds, shapes and motions in the context of daily activities and play (e.g., creates red, blue, red, blue pattern with blocks). Process standards: Communication: Students will communicate their understanding of patterns by repeating the pattern on the worksheet in the correct order. The students will also be allowed to use a partner for clarification or to check his or her work when completed. Connections: Students are connecting their knowledge of patterns to geometry while working with different shapes in the activity. This is also a great way for the students to start to recognize and create patterns. Problem Solving: Students will be using their problem solving skills to complete the pattern given to him or her on the worksheet. Then he or she will also make his or her own pattern. Reasoning and Proof: After completing the worksheet the students will be able to assess their own work by checking their answers in the back of the folder. They will also have an opportunity to create their own pattern to practice making a pattern. Differentiations: The teacher can differentiate this center by using three different colored folders that have three different worksheets that vary in difficultly. The students will know which folder he or she should use by an attached list of students names. The worksheets will be similar in appearances and each student will complete a headband with their own pattern making it so the students do not realize the varying levels. Advanced Learners and ELL Level 5: (red) For advanced learners it will be modified to better challenge their abilities. These students will be expected to continue five shapes and five color patterns opposed to the four shape and four color patterns of the average learners. There will also be fewer shapes already filled in on the worksheet for the students. On level Learners and ELL Level 3:(purple) This activity meets the standards of creating and extending patterns. The students will be asked to finish four shape and four color patterns. The ELL students will be able to manipulate the activity in the same was as the on level learners because the activity lacks any words in the directions it uses pictures for directions. Struggling Learners and ELL Level 1: (orange) This activity will be modified to make the lesson more beneficial for these students. The students will be asked to complete patterns that have three shapes and three colors. These students will also have more shapes filled in already to help the students finish the worksheet. The ELL students will be able to manipulate the activity in the same was as the on level learners because the activity lacks any words in the directions. These students will be given an opportunity to use partners. Materials ~ Folder with worksheet ~ Expo markers and erasers ~ Regular markers ~ Foam shapes ~ Strips of paper Rationale These centers allow for students to utilize the importance of patterns through various activities. Each center allows for students to recognize and grow different lengths and difficulties of patterns. These activities will also help students to realize that patterns are all around in the world. Patterns can also

be utilized as a starter for reading and word families; with these learning centers the teacher can build the appropriate foundations for learning how to recognize patterns not only in math but also in reading. Description: In this center the students will use the assigned folder for their learning level and complete the activity inside. The activity consists of the student repeating the pattern that is given by drawing in the answers with expo markers on the laminated page. Once the student is done and checked his or her answer he or she can create his or her own pattern by making a headband out of a strip of paper. The student will create a pattern on the strip using foam shapes and markers. Then once they have made the make the strip into a headband to wear! Assessment The students will be checking their own work with the answer key in the back of the folder. The student will also be assessed informally as the teacher circulates the room checking the students work and the teacher will check the students headbands to see if the students were able to make their own pattern.
