Lesson Plan Teacher: Maylene Bowe Lesson Title: Biomes Content Area: Science - Grade 5 Introduction This lesson

is designed to increase the students appreciation for the ecological diversity that exists within our world and promote critical thinking in regards to our environment. Duration: 8 x 35 minutes/8 days/2 weeks Objectives: Students will be able to: Compare and contrast the characteristics of the Biomes being studied Create a 3D model of one of the Biomes Create presentations using internet resources Standards addressed: Idaho State Department of Education Science Content Standards by Grade Level 5.S.1.1.1 Compare and contrast different systems 5.S.1.2.3 Use models to explain or demonstrate a concept. 5.S.1.3.1 Analyze changes that occur in and among systems. 5.S.1.6.3 Select and use appropriate tools and techniques to gather and display data. Select and use applications effectively and productively d. Transfer current knowledge to learning of new technologies

Prerequisite skills needed for this lesson: Students should know how to: log into the student account on the schools server. use Edmodo to post, attach, and embed files and other media. Use GoAnimate or Xtranormal to select an Internet application and conduct research. sign up for an internet application, and share work from that application keyboard, use spell check, and correct grammatical errors. Materials needed: Computers with internet access(lab), student electronic devices, projector, speakers, Grouping Strategies: Whole class activities, group work in 5s, individual activity Activities: First Segment: Introduction 2 x 35 minute lessons Students will be introduced to Ecosystems and Biomes. Students will view the following video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtZcN4bzsrA The teacher will direct students to access ZohoShow 3.0, and direct them to sign up The teacher will then provide some instruction on how to use Zoho show https://www.zoho.com/docs/zoho-docs-video-tour.html The teacher will encourage students to create presentations at home on any topic for practice Students will be informed of the assignments to be completed by the end of the module. At this point the students should choose the Biome they wish to work on for their individual 3D project. Second Segment: Webquest and presentation group work 2 x 35 minute lessons In groups of five the students will be instructed to conduct a webquest (see below)

Students will be reminded that they can use the Zoho Doc application to record and save their notes if necessary, as the information would be needed to create their presentations. In their groups students should work on their presentations (they should begin this work during class, and complete it at home using Zohos collaborative feature) Groups should post their presentations to Edmodo before the next weeks lesson. Students should review each others presentations, and give valuable feedback. Segment 3: Comparing biomes, and identifying biomes in your country 2 x 35 minute lessons In groups of five (groups used previously), review resources provided for webquest already done. Choose any two biomes (can be the one you have chosen for your individual project, and another one, but you are limited to the one chosen for your individual project). Find out if any biomes being studied are present in your country. Use table provided on Zoho docs to guide you. You can use the table template, or you can create your own chart to present the information. Use information in the tables to create either a GoAnimate or Xtranormal animated video. Each group will present and discuss their findings for the class. Segment 4: 3D project and oral presentations 2 x 35 minute lessons Students will use the 3D projects they created to assist them in orally presenting the biome that they chose. Students should present for no longer than three minutes. Students can use their electronic devices or cue cards to refer to notes if needed. Evaluation: Chart comparing similarities and differences among biomes List of biomes found in your country Student Self Evaluation and Reflection Teacher Evaluation of presentations and 3D model
