Welcome to Miss Trickeys Class!

Summer School 2013

Rules
We have three rules: 1) Be Responsible 2) Be Respectful 3) Be productive These rules will cover all aspects of behavior in our classroom to make sure our time together goes smoothly. If youre questioning whether or not your behavior follows the rules, ask yourself: is it responsible? Is it respectful? Is it productive? Hand Signals: To make sure we have as little distractions as possible during the learning process, well use a few hand signals to cover basic requests: 1 finger: I need a pencil/I need to sharpen my pencil. 2 fingers: I need to use the restroom. 3 fingers: I need a tissue. When I see you use the hand signal, Ill either respond with the okay signal, meaning do what you need to do, or the stop signal, meaning give me a minute to finish what Im doing. If I give you the stop, signal again in about two minutes. You will need a bathroom pass to be in the hallway.

Procedures
Entering the class/ Journaling Each class period you are expected to politely enter the classroom, grab your journal, and begin answering the writing prompt on the board from your assigned seat. You will have 5 minutes to answer in paragraph form. Journaling will always be our first activity of the day, and will pertain to our reading or activity.

Getting your attention Occasionally, Ill need to get your attention from a group assignment, or just when we start class. When I need your attention, I will say: If you can hear me now, clap once. When you hear that, please stop talking and clap. I will work my way up in counting. It shouldnt take more than three claps to get the whole class together.

Grading Policies
You will not have homework during our 16 days together; however, because we are together for a short period of time, it is important that you get all of your work done in class. Instead of letter grades, you will be rewarded a grade of proficient or not proficient based off of the work that you complete in class, as well as the final exam and writing assignment.

Assignments
This class will consist of a variety of assignments. We will begin the course with a pre test to gauge where you are in your learning, and conclude with a post test/final exam, to measure growth. The first two weeks of the course will cover reading. We will be using The Hunger Games as our anchor novel for the course. Since we will not have enough time to read the novel in its entirety, we will be reading about 10 key chapters and use the novel to practice reading strategies. Aside from the novel, we will explore different styles of both fictional and nonfiction writing that relate to the themes explored in the novel. The second two weeks of the course will focus on writing. Our course will conclude with persuasive essay relating to the reading that we covered in the first half of the class. Before we begin writing, we will explore the writing process and complete many activities to ensure you are comfortable when you begin writing. We will have access to a lab to type our essays!

Missing Work
In the event that you do not finish the work in class, see me!! You will have to complete the work at home and bring it to me the next day. We do not have enough time together to have missing work make up, but there will ALWAYS be enough time to work in class as long as you are being productive and responsible (see: the rules )

Absent?
If you are ever absent, please check the absent work bulletin board. Your absent work will ALWAYS be posted there. Ask a class captain to explain the work to you. If you still have questions after that , see me! IT IS YOUR JOB TO CHECK FOR ABSENT WORK AND COMPLETE IT BY THE NEXT DAY!!!!
