II. The Two Senses of Religious Experience A. Religious Experience as a Descriptive Term a description of an experience considered religious (for discussion purposes) perspective: disengaged/disinterested observer not after truth value or truth claim of the experience B. Religious Experience as an Engaged Term - the term is evaluative - perspective: the believers or participant/observer - the truth claim (reality of God) is asserted C. Reason for the distinction (political) - peace treaty between believers and unbelievers - a designated term that is used without offending either the believer or the unbeliever III. Revelation in Theology A. Religious Experience as an Engaged Term CLAIM: God does not live outside, separate from the world. God is active in the world. B. Revelation the term used to talk about religious experience 1. Definition literal: removal of a veil, the disclosure of what is hidden general: the appearance of the sacred or the self-manifestation of the transcendent Many religions testify to divine self-disclosures in their sacred scriptures. 2.
