Cabalquinto Experiment #1 : Lip Balm and Ink Chromatography

Locker Number: 6A November 17, 2010

I. Introduction: In this study, the aim is to understand the concept of intermolercular forces of attraction through producing a lip balm and physically separating mixtures through ink chromatography. In the past experiments, the foci of these test are the intramolecular forces of attraction or the bonds formed in the chemical reactions such as covalent, ionic and metallic bonds. On the other hand, other forms of attraction also occur in these chemical reactions, which are called intermolecular forces. In contrast to chemical bonds, the strength of these nonbonded interactions, such as dipole-dipole, hydrogen and dispersion forces, are weak. Nevertheless, these intermolecular forces can come together to create strong and firm interactions, determining physical properties of substances. This concept applies the concept of like dissolves like. (1)

On the other hand, chromatography is a physical separation of the different part of a mixture or solution. (1) Polarity and intermolecular forces used are important factors in chromatography. In this process the components of the colors in inks or dyes are made up of pigments which have varying properties and will interact with the substance with same properties. 1 (See: References)
