The Church as a Means to Faith

The Church helps develop faith because the Church has kept the true faith of the Apostles and teaches it through worship and the sacraments. It develops faith through the Mass, readings, homily and prayers. The priest helps guide people in their faith. The Church helps guide our faith through the priest and bishops.

The Church as a Means to Salvation

Salvation is eternal life and removal of sin. The Church helps bring salvation because of the faith it teaches and presence of the Holy Spirit. Through the sacraments we receive salvation and restore our relationship with God. Baptism and reconciliation ( confession) help us to wash away sin which is stopping us from receiving salvation.

The Church as the Body of Christ

The Church carries on being the body of Christ now he has ascended to heaven. Through the teachings and charity of the Church it represents Jesus continued work on earth. Mass is important because we feel the presence of Jesus and receive the Eucharist which is his body. It shows Jesus is still active in the world through the work of the Church.

The Church and Communion of Saints

The communion of saints means the Christians on earth and Christians in heaven are in contact with each other and share their gifts and prayers with each other. This is important because it means that Catholics on Earth can ask the saints in heaven for help and Catholics in purgatory can be helped by the prayers of Catholics on Earth.

Why the Bible has authority

It is inspired by the Holy Spirit It contains the teachings of Jesus. The Bible is important for Catholics because it contains Gods commands on how Christians should behave. And show what Jesus did on Earth. It gives us guidelines on how to live our livesparables. It teaches about Jesus death and resurrection.

Apostolic Tradition
Catholics believe that authority of the Church comes from the Bible and the tradition of the Apostles. Catholics believe that the Pope has special authority because he is the successor of St Peter, chosen by the Holy Spirit to lead the Church. We believe the Catholic Faith is the true Faith because it has come from the early Apostles who stated the church and they knew Jesus.

The Magisterium
The Magisterium is the living teaching office of the Church today- made up of the Pope, Cardinals and Bishops. The main sources and traditions of authority are interpreted for Catholics by the Magisterium. They will discuss, for example what the Catholics view is on genetic engineering.

Protestants beliefs on the authority of the Church

The Bible is only true source of authority Everyone has equal authority in the Church Ruled democratically Church guidance from the authority are not commands but a guide. Thats why there are lots of different Protestant churches.

The role of the Parish Priest

Celibacy for Priests

Catholic priests have to be celibate in order to copy Jesus and maintain the tradition. They are in a sense married to the Church and therefore their commitment is to support the community. Other Christians allow their priests to be married as they feel there are many advantages to allowing priests to marry should they want. Like give advice to married couples.
