What is pneumonia?

Pneumonia is an inammation of the lung tissue caused by viral, bacterial or fungal infections The condition is divided into three types: communityacquired, nursing home-acquired, and hospital-acquired. Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is transmitted between people in the course of their normal activities Nursing home-acquired pneumonia is spread between residents of a nursing home. Hospital-acquired pneumonia (also called nosocomial pneumonia) is spread between patients in a hospital People with pneumonia may have symptoms ranging from mild to severe, depending on age, general health and the cause of their pneumonia

How does it occur?

Infectious pneumonia occurs when germs invade the lungs. In most cases of pneumonia, a person inhales bacteria or viruses The germs will travel through the airways into the lung tissue When it gets there, it multiplies and causes the lungs to become inamed. This may cause uid to collect inside or around the air sacs of the lungs The uid interferes with the ability of a lung to take in oxygen and move it to the cells of the body. The body is also stressed because it has to work to ght the infection that caused the pneumonia
