Nicole Dinovo Part 1: Choice Explanation I have chosen to do the short story option.

I have chosen this option because this novel gives the reader the ability to think creatively and critically. These help to inspire stories. I am not particular good at storytelling, so this assignment will help me work on that. Part 2: Assessment Criteria Weighting

The Standards

A Flawless execution of the standard. Masterful fiction!

B Meets the standard with some room for improvement

C Approaches the standard with substantial room for improvement

Plot The plot is centered on a central conflict. The rising action leads up to a clear climax (or anticlimax) and is resolved in a way that fits the story and makes sense to the reader. (Put a man up a tree. Throw rocks at him. Get him down.) Setting The story world is wellestablished. The reader gets a clear sense of the fictional environment in which the story takes place. Characterization The characters come to life on the page due to the careful crafting of the dialogue, actions, reactions, thoughts and descriptions. Flat characters have a clear purpose. Dialogue (optional?) The dialogue reveals character, establishes background information, and advances the action. All dialogue is properly punctuated. Theme/Message The story has a clear theme and message. The reader could make an interpretive claim about the storys meaning.

Language Usage The story does not waste words. The story is beautifully crafted through the use of descriptive figurative language (similes, metaphors, personification, imagery/sensory details). The language creates a specific mood that contributes to our understanding of the story. Story has an identifiable narrative voice and a consistent point-of-view. Language Conventions The story is well organized and has proper paragraphing. It has been proofread and is free of mechanical and spelling errors. All of its run-ons and fragments and been corrected. Reflection The reflection accurately and thoroughly dissects the perspective of the story and explains your use of poetic devices and refinements with specific examples.

The most difficult topic will be the theme/message, because this will be difficult for me to develop. The easiest will be language conventions, because it is simple to ensure all grammatical mistakes are taken care of.
