GOVERNMENT Athens became a democracy around 500 BCE. Free man (Greek Citizens) were the only ones allowed to vote. Everyday, 500 citizens were chosen to help run day-to-day business/create laws. Proposed laws had to be approved a larger Assembly. All citizens (men) had the right to speak at Assembly.

ECONOMY Their economy was based on trade with other city-states. Huge markets (agoras) were full of Athenians buying olive oil, wine and bread. Everything could be purchased at the Agora, even slaves. Athenians would purchase their goods using bronze, silver and gold coins.

EDUCATION Boys were taught literature, mathematics, science, physical fitness and the arts from age 6-14. Books were expensive, so boys had to memorize everything their teacher said. Girls were taught to recite poetry, sing, dance, sew and care for the home.

WOMEN Girls were usually married by the age of 15. Athenian women could not inherit or own property. They could not vote, attend assembly, or represent themselves in court. Their responsibilities were taking care of the home, managing the children and slaves, and teaching their children (if they could read and write).
