Tell students that inventions have the potential to change the way the world works, and that they should think about this as we read todays story, which is about a storyteller. (5 minutes) Ask students for examples of different types of storytelling. (Spoken, written, mimed, acted, TV/movies, pictures) Share picture of 1963 puppet show reaction, asking the class what the children in the photo might be looking at. Explain that stories come in a variety of forms and today we will be reading a story called Kamishibai Man about a character in Japan who uses pictures on a stage to tell stories. Write the phonetic pronunciation of kamishibai (kah-mee-she-bye) next to the title already written on the board. (5 minutes) Have students turn to page 291 in their books. Ask for reactions to the storys cover illustration. - Who is this man? - What is he looking at? - What is that drawing? - What else is in the illustration? Set purpose for reading: When preparing for this lesson, I noticed that in some pictures the man was old and in some pictures he was young. I wonder if this is the same man or two different men. Were going to read to find out more about this and our previous questions. (5 minutes) Read Kamishibai Man out loud to the class, pausing to ask comprehension questions and to review vocabulary in context. - Pp. 292-293 What do you learn about the setting and characters at the beginning of the story? - Clarify who is speaking in the 6th paragraph. - How does Baachan probably feel about Jiichan going on his rounds? Pp. 249-295 Why do you think Jiichan is not nervous riding across the old bridge even though it is rickety? Why do you think Jiichan hums a tune that his mother used to sing when he was a boy? Pp. 296-297 Define blasted. What does a blasted horn sound like? Why do you think drivers blasted their horns at Jiichan? Pp. 298-299 Define vacant. Why would Jiichan pull into a vacant lot? Is Jiichan lost or not?

Pp. 300-301 Why is Jiichan carrying the wooden chest with him? Who does Jiichan talk to as he gets things ready for storytelling? What does this make you think about Jiichan? Pp. 302-303 Is this the same storyteller? Why does he look so much younger? I dont understandLets reread page 302 to clarify Why does page 303 look different from the others? Pp. 304-305 How do you think Jiichan feels about children? What details make you think this? When Jiichan says the television pictures were jerky and blurry and had no color, what do you think he was comparing them to? Pp. 306-307 What two things does the author compare on page 306 to create a picture in the readers mind? Why do you think Jiichan thinks those two things are alike? What does familiar mean? As the kamishibai man went around the familiar neighborhoods, why did children start to act as if they didnt know him? Pp. 308-309 Tell in time order what happened on Jiichans last day as a kamishibai man. Why do you think the boy looked right at Jiichan rather than at the story pictures? Pp. 310-311 Define applause. How did the audience react to his story? How do you know that the people talking are in the present rather than imagined children in the old mans flashback? Why is there a young man with a movie camera in the crowd? What clues is the author using to show that the story has moved from a flashback to the present? (25 minutes)

Finish the story by talking about flashbacks. What is a flashback? Tell the students that flashbacks help us understand what happened to a character and how that impacts the character now. What parts in this story are flashbacks? Where does it start and where does it end? What does this flashback tell us about the kamishibai man? (5 minutes) After completing Kamishibai Man, students will work independently on writing complete sentence responses to target vocabulary questions. Hand out the worksheets and circulate the room helping students with their answers as needed. Remind the students that they should be writing complete sentences, capitalizing the first word and placing a period at the end, and that the vocabulary word should be in their answer. (15 minutes)
