Fire once again broke out in Hamburg, this time in the rear of North Third Street between
State and Island streets, on March 24.
The fire broke out sometime after noon only a block away from the fire that ravaged three
addresses on Fourth Street in early February.
The fire began with a garage behind the block on Third Street, and traveled onto Windsor
Press, which sustained some smoke damage. Over 100 firefighters from all over Berks County,
as well as Lehigh County, came to fight the flames.
Assisting at the scene was Boyertown's Salvation Army
Emergency Disaster truck which fed and rehydrated the fire-
fighters after they estinguished the flames.
State police fire marshalls Mark Demko and Michael J.
Yeity responded to the fire where they conducted an origin
and cause investigation.
The fire consumed several residential garages and their
contents and damaged Windsor Press.
They concluded that the origin began in the garage at the
rear of 16 N. Third Street, however were unable to deter-
mine the cause and ignition source.
The property damage was estimated at approximately
$750,000.
Hamburg Chief of Police Michael Painter said thanks to
the firefighters, the fire was extinguished in a fast and pro-
fessional manner.
Painter added that the firefighters were quick and suc-
Photos by Denice Schaeffer cessfully put out the fire before it could do more damage.
