Lesson Plan Design 2012

Subject: Science Content Focus (Topic): Earth, Moon and Sun Grade Level(s): 2

Date: Course for which the Lesson is developed: Media and Technology in the Classroom Classroom Teacher: Time allotted:

Standard(s)/Benchmark(s) to be met in the Lesson: (ILS, Common Core, or Professional Learning Standards) Each standard should correspond to one or more objective. 12.F. Know and apply concepts that explain the composition and structure of the universe and Earth's place in it. 12.F.1a. Identify and describe characteristics of the sun, Earth and moon as familiar objects in the solar system.

Learning Objective(s): What are the students expected to know and/or do in the lesson? Write out each specific objective to be met by students in the lesson. The Second Graders will be able to describe and position the Earth, Moon and Sun in relationship to one another and their own surfaces.

Assessment Tool(s) and Procedures: What will provide evidence that students meet objectives? Every objective must be assessed. The students will be able to draw a diagram of the Earth, Moon and Sun. They will also identify vocabulary and why the Earth, Moon and Sun are connected and term describing each.

Procedures: List in sequence the actions taken by teacher and students throughout the lesson. A. Engage Students: (Diagnostic/Pre-Assessment may be included here.) To instruct the Second Graders in learning the concepts they will view a diagram of the Moon orbiting Earth and Earth orbiting the Sun. They will also be shown example of the term they need to know. B. Communicate the Purpose of the Lesson to Students (Objectives and Assessment): Have children draw their own diagrams of what they see and compare in groups, then with the class so I can asses if they are understanding the lesson. C. Instructional Sequence: 1. Show children example of lesson topics. 2. Discuss what they see. 3. Answer questions and spark discussion. 4. Give children correct materials. 5. Instruct them to draw what they have just seen in the presentation. 6. Put students in groups. 7. Group discussion. 8. Class discussion of important points to note.

D. Monitoring Student Engagement and Learning: (What will the teacher do to ensure student engagement?) Students will discuss as a class and in groups and create their own example of the lesson mater. E. Closure: Purpose of the Lesson is clearly restated by students and/or teacher (Objectives and Assessment) At the end of the lesson I will have the students act out the different parts of the lesson and call on students to define characteristics of each part. So important parts will be restated and highlighted.

Lesson Plan Details Instructional Materials: Science book, coloring materials, paper and pencil. Use of Technology: Projector, laptop and or smart board. Safety in the Physical Environment: They will be in a safe environment while rotating in small groups within the classroom. Academic Language List the Academic Language used in the Lesson Explain how the Academic Language is Orbit scaffolded in the Lesson Axis Cycles-Moon Learning the definitions in presentation, discussion Craters-Moon and activities. Rising and Setting-Sun Star-Sun

Describe the Evidence that Students know and use Academic Language appropriately: When drawing the diagrams and during discussion.

Assessment (Identify the type(s) of assessment used in this lesson and how it provides evidence that students will meet the objective(s). At least one type of assessment is required in a lesson plan.) Diagnostic (Pre-): Discussion of what they see in the presentation.

Reflective: I will determine their knowledge after the grade and work is reflected.

Lesson Plan Design 2012

Formative: Drawing a diagram on their own and the discussing it in groups to make appropriate changes and then their diagrams will be assessed.

Summative: At the end of the lesson they will be able to act out and discuss what they learned .

Differentiating Instruction Identify the Element(s) of the Lesson that is Differentiated: Content Process Product Explain how it is Differentiated: Product This element of the lesson is important because it helps demonstrate what the students learned from the lesson and shows them being able to apply it. Identify the Student Characteristic that you will use to Differentiate: Student Readiness Student Interest Explain how it is used to Differentiate: Student Interest It depends on the individual student and if they are working efficiently and using the right tools to learn. Student Learning Profile

Analyzing Teaching (Reflection): If you could teach this lesson to the same group of students again, what are two or three things you would do differently to improve the learning of these students based on their varied developmental and academic needs and characteristics? Consider missed opportunities and other aspects of planning, instruction, and/or assessment.

Clearly state each change you would make.

Explain why and how you would change it.

Explain the difference it would make in student learning. Give evidence from your experience in teaching the lesson.
