Phonics Here We Come

Teaching Phonics Sample

Pay close attention to how the first two letters in the alphabet is taught using phonics

Activity 1: Introducing yourself1/2


You will need old newspapers, scissors and blank paper Each participant has to search through an old newspaper to find one set of the letters that make up his or her first name The first letter needs to be a capital letter Paste the letters on a blank sheet of paper

Activity 1: Introducing yourself2/2


All participants sit in a circle carrying the pieces of paper with their names on them The introduction is to be done in this manner:

I am ch, ch, ch (make the sound of the letter) Charles (name of participant)

Activity 2: Hard or Soft C


Participants have to divide materials found in the room into two groups: those with hard c and those with soft c sound Write these down on a piece of mahjong paper

Activity 3: Story Telling

Use verbal storytelling to practise listening for beginning sounds. Ask the child to listen for words that begin with a particular sound as you tell a simple story. Have the child clap each time he or she hears a words that begins with the chosen sound and then repeat the word.

Activity 4: Same Beginnings


Cut out pairs of pictures from the magazines/newspapers which have the same initial sound. Make a set of 10 pairs Paste these pictures on manila cards Drop all these cards in one box
