What brought you to TU? I wanted to teach locally and remain in my home community. I also prefer a small private atmosphere for teaching and learning because it allows students to develop professional relationships with their instructors.

How do you define good teaching? Student-centered with a healthy mixture of lecture, group activities, class discussion, and a little fun regardless of the discipline.

Heminger Center: Was It Worth The Wait?

Emily Stant Staff Writer

Many students at Tiffin University have been waiting for the day that the highly anticipated and long advertised new recreation center would be complete. Now that it is here, though, was it worth the multiple years of waiting? Many students have opinions ranging from strongly positive to heavily negative. One might think that at an academic institution, such as Tiffin University, there might be more focus on the academic life or maybe even a slightly more progressive strategy for the serious growth of the institution in regards to classroom space, living arrangements, or even office spaces. With all of these things in mind, why do none of these aspects exist within the newly built Heminger Center? Of course there is room for improvement

within the already existing building, but why were none of these issues touched on in the building plans for a multi-million dollar addition to the campus? All of the space and money used for the building did nothing for the schools academic purposes. The entire building was not a negative addition to the campus, though; it does a wonderful job of assisting in the development of many of our athletic teams at TU. The indoor practice room for many of our sports has been a serious improvement for the athletes, especially outdoor sports that previously had to use spaces off campus and work around other groups schedules. According to Lauren Osman, a TU senior, Heminger is a facility, and it helps wrestling put on bigger matches that they could not have hosted before, but I dont really use it. Another senior, Amber Brickner, says I like that

it has an indoor track and the half foot-ball field, but I was honestly expecting more out of it. I figured the upstairs would have like, a gym or something, with more treadmills and whatnot, so thered be another place to work out. Heminger also offers the school a new possibility for revenue by bringing in outside events, practice, and organizations. So far, the indoor track meets have brought in large crowds, and the community sporting events have resulted in positive responses from the community toward TU. However, some students

think it needs to be more accessible for the average TU students. Brandon Perry, a TU junior, said, It needs to be more accessible to the students to use it instead of just being for sports teams. Also, there could be more to it for the amount of money spent to build it. Taylor Pierce, a senior, agrees. She also thinks more things should be near Heminger to encourage use because of its distance from main campus. According to Pierce, It is not well maintained for the amount of money put into the building; it is like a breeding ground for germs. Intramurals have also

blossomed with the new availability in space. What do all of these enhancements seem to have in common? Athletics. Why is it that the main improvements to the campus seem to be aimed at student athletes? The main focus of a university should be on academics for all students. With the amount of money invested in the Heminger Center, the enhancements of everyday life for common students should have been more visibly acknowledged.
