March 14, 2013 Lesson Reflection: Anansi the Spider I taught a read aloud lesson on African Folktales and

read the book Anansi the Spider. My read aloud was planned two days in advance with my cooperating teacher, Miss Refsin. This was my first opportunity to teach literacy in the classroom; I was a little nervous but I did not let the students see it. I taught this lesson to a small group which was about half the class and it took place during second period which is about 10:00 am. I showed great poise while reading to the class and it seemed almost effortless; my cooperating teacher evaluated me and noted that I looked very comfortable and that this is one reason why the students stayed calm and engaged during my lesson. My objective was that students will be able to identify the lesson the folktale is trying to teach, and also be able to describe the changes in nature that occur. The purpose for teaching this lesson was because of the unit on African folktales; Miss Refsin supplied me with the book to do the read aloud. I had stated in my lesson plan that we would establish turn and talk partners but this was not as effective as I would have liked for it to be. When I would ask questions the students talked to the group and not to their partner, this is one of the things I would change if I were to teach the lesson again. I would also change the journal entry; I did not differentiate enough for some students. Students should have been able to draw a picture along with writing if necessary. I also need to work on modeling my lessons before sending students off to do their own work.
