Summative PDA Reflection (Submitted after completion of 15 PDA hours) Name: Joseph C Kim Semester: 2013 Spring Please

provide evidence (written commentary and/or video) of what you learned about music teaching, learning or leadership as a result of your PDA experiences this semester. Consider: Musicianship skills (e.g., use of piano, modeling, conducting skills, knowledge of literature) o I have gained insightful knowledge in teaching and conducting and got introduced to many new repertoires that I didnt know before. I have attended various reading sessions and workshops on building choirs, dealing with changing voices, studying scores, and ext. I loved observing different ensembles and their differences. Each ensemble displayed their own specialty or core in their program. Every conductor was different. I took notes of conductors that I wish to observe more or study with later. Also, watching student conductors conduct at the competition was an inspiring learning experience. It was interesting to see how each one connected to the choir differently and the techniques they used to create music. 2013 ACDA conference was a valuable experience because Ive grew as a musician, future educator, and a conductor. Planning and implementing instruction (e.g., working toward objectives, instructional process, use of warm-ups, promoting critical thinking, student centered learning, assessment, helping students become independent, room set-up, teaching concepts through the rehearsal process, music literacy) o During student conducting competition, I have observed how student conductors worked with two repertoires in a limited time. Each conductor displayed different personalities and strengths while working with the choir. Ive learned several techniques and activities that I can use in my rehearsals. Externally expressing musical phrases with gestures helped students to visualized the music and be physically engaged while singing. Also, creating certain images to the music helped students to express intrinsically and brought the ensemble together. During concert sessions, it was interesting to see how each ensemble performed differently. Some stood in one position

all the way through. Some were more creative and used lighting and props to give different visuals. Some had different standing position or choreography to every piece. Also, observing their programs gave me ideas that I can use for my ensembles in the future. Leadership or management skills (in your self or for students). o During the conference, I worked as an interpreter for a publishing company from Korea. I have introduced their scores and books to many other American publishers. During the process I got to have meetings with composers Mark Hayes, Allen Pote, and many other composers. I have introduced them to GIA and Dr. Jordan and they are now working together to publish Dr. Jordans book in Korean, which Ill be partaking as the translator. I had chance to network with many musicians and publishers and it helped me to develop social and communication skills during the process.
