Eighth Grade ESL, its election time and we have been previously working on how elections work in the United States in a history lesson. Objectives: students will be able to differentiate between presidential candidates and use their best judgment to vote in a mock election. The students will be shown a presidential debate for the upcoming election. After viewing the debate, the class will be separated into three groups; one group will be republican representatives, one group will be democratic representatives, and the last group will be the judges and in charge of questions. The students will work together to formulate what their view points are on topics of importance in this election. The two political parties will set up mini campaigns to really get them involved and in the spirit of the election. The questions group will compose three to five questions to ask both political parties during the election; the questions need to be open-ended questions, not something that can be answered with yes or no. Students will have a presidential debate based off the two candidates running, it will be set up as a mock debate and at the end we will have an election. The students will pick a person to be their presidential candidate and then each person in the group will have a role to play, but they will all work for a common goal which is to deliver a good debate. The students will all help during the debate. The mock election will consist of the students voting for one of the two candidates. After the votes are all tallied there will be a chart made that will represent the votes so the students see the visual of who has won the election. After the election is over the class will discuss as a group who they voted for and for what reasons. This will all be done during the week prior to and during election week so we will also have the news on to show the students how the election turns out and if they support the decision that America makes.
