Council 2/6/13 Year Overview: Communication, spaces, etc. Community council + Student government are helping to influence the administration and faculty. Note: student handbook is now available for student viewing, as long as its watermarked as a draft. Key: Main idea o Question that stemmed off of the main idea Yes answers to the previous question No answers to the previous question Student SpacesProposal (additional notes and explanations, changes to current ways): 635 as a peer-tutoring space were classes are not held (approx max 25?) o Should we move the library computers to 635? The noise levels in the library could go down 635 could be too small for the computers The library computers may not be the root of the noise o Could this just be a silent space, without separating the library and the peer tutoring? Peer tutoring helps the culture of the library, and we dont know if this is the root of the noise Creating a silent space could be easier than moving the noise, and is enclosed. What do students need? The library is already a comfortable space, so it would be harder to change the culture there. We have the databases online, so they are accessible anywhere This could seem like the library is exiling the studious students It could be more of a gift of silence Learning commons will remain in the library. The central library space should be quiet, but back two tables can be a bit louder. o What is the identity of the library? Should this translate into a different name? o Should we add carrels to (to the back of) the library? Carrels, seats with walls, for individual study in the 7th floor hallway, ends of halls. Casual seating on the second half of the hallway, farther from the science labs. o How do we separate the carrel side and the casual seating side? Would it work? Even if they dont separate, they could be effective

General Consensus: - Add carrels to the back of the library, take out the tables - Lets try to keep the peer tutoring in the library! - 635 as a silent room

Casual seating on the second half of the hallway, farther from the science labs. Do we limit the peer tutoring slots during specific times? Student responsibilityhow do we promote respect toward faculty and the library and create a school space and expectations? o Student shaming scare tactics only work for a short time Make the 6th floor area a peer tutoring space 635 as a collaborative space with tables, the back of the library with back- to-back carrels, and the front with only peer tutoring, learning commons, etc. Carrels in the hallways, and open the cafeteria and other rooms all day.
