CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.3.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, distinguishing literal from nonliteral language.

Objective: Students will be able to read Amelia Bedelia with understanding, precision, and ease. Materials: Procedure: Introduction: This is a fiction book about a woman named Amelia Bedelia who is working on her first day at the Rodgers house as their maid. Have you ever heard of a maid doing chores around a house? Lets see if Amelia Bedelia does the chores that she is asked to do. On page sixteen Amelia begins to go over her list of chores. Look at how the writing is different and in script. Also pay attention to how Amelia follows directions, which you can see starting on page eighteen. Keep both of these things in mind while reading this book. I think youll enjoy reading all about Amelia Bedelias first day. Ill be around to listen to you read. Conferencing: Listen to each student read a page while keeping a running record. After listening to the student read ask a short comprehension question. Whole Group Teaching Point: o If there were any fluency or comprehension problems go over these. o Talk about why script was used throughout the book and how this is different from the other words on the page. o Talk about the difference between following the directions literally and nonliterally. Assessment: Running records and comprehension questions will be done during student teacher conferences.

Management Issues/Transitions: If students finish early they can reread and mark the book for any tricky or interesting parts. Ensure that the students are reading silently unless they are being asked to read to the teacher. Differentiation: None, the students are grouped homogeneously.
