Time for Term Two

Welcome to Term Two! Firstly, a huge thank you for your tireless support of your childrens learning last term. Research shows that ensuring children read, or are read to, every night for at least 10 minutes maintains and develops reading skills, forms positive habits and raises enthusiasm. It was also inspiring to see so many children going the extra mile outside of school hours and writing their own stories or poems and practising a variety of maths skills. Winter sports practises are under way; please make sure that your children have any necessary tools that they may require such as sneakers or shin pads. On the subject of footwear, with temperatures dropping feel free to send a pair of slippers or thick snuggly socks for use in the classroom. To help children extend their general knowledge and acquire skills in answering multiple choice and true/false questions we are going to start each week with a general knowledge quiz. This should be a bit of fun and a valuable tool in learning pressure-free test sitting skills. There may even be the possibility of prizes .

Term Two

Building Blocks for Success

Reading Spelling Writing - Maths
Spelling: Between three and ten words will come home on Friday afternoons in an Own-Work book, please help your child practise reading and writing these. Suggestions on ways to do this can be found at the front of their own-work book. These books should return to school every day with testing being on Fridays. Writing: Term Two sees us exploring procedural writing, this will include writing (and following) recipes and instructions on how to make or do something. The ultimate test attempting to follow the instructions that someone else has written. We Reading: Monday to Thursday home readers will come home with your child. Please take the time to listen to your child read, discuss the text and sign your childs Read It book each night. Poem books will come home on Fridays, these need to be returned on Monday. Remember that having the same book more than once helps build fluency and encourages greater discussion and exploration of texts. To work towards the 100% club children need to read a minimum of five nights per week and get all their spelling words correct each week. will be working on correct letter formation, using our spelling words accurately in our personal writing and reading our work back (aloud) to check it makes sense. Poetry, personal recounts, emails and letters will also be a part of the programme. Math: Making maths real to children is key this term with our food related topic underpinning this. Measurement covering temperature, volume, capacity, weight and some area will be complimented by exploring fractions. Ongoing work on developing knowledge of how numbers work, place value, addition and subtraction and instant recall of basic facts form the basis of our maths programme. ur overarching theme this year is How things change.

Topic Food for Fuel

Our key question this term is How does fuel impact our body? The ultimate aim is to develop awareness and skills to make healthy food choices. We will be using many tools to help enrich our learning experiences including photography, ongoing story boarding, creating advertisements both paper or computer based and filming a meal in a minute advertorial recipe. Many aspects of this topic will be very hands on and we would love your support in a multitude of ways a) let your child help you cook, read recipes together, discuss measurements, b) come in and help us at school when we are cooking, c) take your child grocery shopping, talk about how and why you make choices between products, d) garden together.

Class Grocery Store We are making a shop in our class. If you have any clean empty packets, cartons, plastic/sturdy glass jars or similar items please send them along for use in our shop.
