Science Learning Cycle Activities Sec 06 Spring 2013

Activity Title (author)

The Air is All Around Us (Kelsey R) Can You Hear Me? (Jenna J)
Grade Level

What students will be doing

Students will be investigating how air takes up space through inquiry based labs. Students will be experiencing different ways sound travels through different objects. They will see whether sound travels best through solids or liquids. Students will be exploring their environment by using their five senses. Students will explore and develop their ideas on properties of physical matter by testing whether different objects sink or float in a body of water. Working in groups, they will test various objects in a tub of water and record whether they sink or float. The class will discuss what makes an object sink or float and will further explore the concept with various objects. Students will be doing a series of activities to learn more about the different characteristics of animals and what those characteristics do for the animal. They will be using their senses to compare themselves to other animals and will be discovering the characteristics beneficial to animals. Students will figure out which coating color of M&M's dissolves the fastest in water. They will have design a fair race and discuss how to compare the speed at which each colored coating dissolves in water. They will begin to identify possible variables and suggest ways to control them and decide whether their results are conclusive enough to answer their objective question. Students will be using fishing wire to test the sense of touch and where people are more apt to feel touch more sensitively. They will be comparing each other's data to determine where the student's touch threshold is most and least sensitive. Students will conduct an investigation to help them determine which types of objects are attracted to magnets. Working collaboratively, they will make predictions and use their observations skills to discover new findings. Students will experiment with the water cycle focusing on condensation. They will be given simple materials to find what effect water temperature has on condensation. After the experiment has been carried out students will document their findings by creating a book with pictures and captions. Students will be learning about the sizes of the planets in our Solar System using spherical objects found in their everyday lives. They will be using objects such as marbles, tennis balls,

balloons, etc. to compare the size of the planets and put them in order. Students will also be researching a planet and its properties with a partner and creating a poster about their planet and presenting it to the class.

Stuck Together (Megan A)

Students will be learning about magnetism electromagnetism. They will experiment with different types of magnets and different types of materials and record their findings. Students will sort foods they eat into the groups on a poster based on MyPlate. Next, they will sort meals from popular restaurants in the area to find the most popular and most healthy meal options at their restaurant. Students will study aspects of the water cycle by simulating the process of water infiltrating through soil layers, saturating the soil above an impermeable layer, flowing along an impermeable layer and naturally exiting the ground at a spring. Working in teams, students will explore characteristics of soil, describing and illustrating a soil profile. They will describe factors affecting groundwater quality and design & build a model of a water treatment plant. Students will carefully record and illustrate their observations, discuss collaboratively and share their work with others. Students will be creating a rocket car that will help teach them about force and motion. By creating this experiment, they will be studying Isaac Newtons third law of motion. Students will be learning about light through teacher instruction and the designing and implementation of their own experiments. They will learn about vocabulary words such as transparent, translucent, and opaque. Students will explore the effect of heating and cooling on rubber. They will work collaboratively to be create their own hypotheses, conduct an experiment, and will be using their observation skills to discover new findings.
