Dixie State College of Utah Secondary Education UNIT PLAN for Musical Theater

Stage 1 DESIRED RESULTS Content Standards & Goals From Utah State Core Standards. (grade 7-12 Theater Foundations III) Transfer Students will be able to independently use their learning to Know how other art forms (specifically music and dance) enhance a theatrical performance, and know when to use them effectively. (Standard IV, Objective 2) Meaning Objective 2: Develop expressive use of the voice Objective 5: Develop ensemble/rehea rsal techniques UNDERSTANDINGS Students will understand that 1. Music/dance will change an audiences understanding words. 2. Music/dance can enhance a theatrical performance ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS Students will keep considering 1. How does music affect spoken words? 2. How does dance affect a theatrical performance? 3. When is it appropriate to use music/dance? When would it not be appropriate?

Standard 2:

Standard IV: Objective 1: Apply internal and external research to a dramatic presentation Objective 2: Compare/integr ate other art forms with theatre

Acquisition Students will know How to use music to enhance a theatrical performance. How to use movement(dance) to enhance a theatrical performance Students will be skilled at 1. Basic music theory (Melody, Harmony, Rhythm) 2. Basic vocal techniques 3. How to derive meaning from music without lyrics.

Stage 2 EVIDENCE PERFORMANCE TASK(S): Students will show that they really understand by evidence of Implementation of the acquired knowledge in a musical review that meets the requirements of the attached rubric. Through a final evaluation where the students will rate their own performance. PERFORMANCE TASK(S) CRITERIA: The performance task will be evaluated by see attached rubric OTHER EVIDENCE: Students will show they have achieved Stage 1 goals by Selecting, blocking and choreographing their individual contributions to the musical review. Stage 3 LEARNING PLAN PRE-ASSESSMENT: During the unit introduction and first lesson there will be an informal assessment performed as they are taught the basic history of musical theater and the important parts of musical theater. MAJOR LEARNING EVENTS: Student success at transfer, meaning, and acquisition depends upon Lesson 1: Broadway Review (continues throughout the entire unit) Lesson 2: The history of musical theater. Lesson 3: Vocal Anatomy Lesson 4: Anatomy of a Song Lesson 5: Music and Movement Lesson 6: Write a scene. PROGRESS MONITORING: There will be constant informal assessment as well as progressive written assessments that will show that the students understand the concepts and can apply them to their own scenes. (see attached)
