Figure 22.8 Examples of stress cells. (a) Cold work required to bend a steel bar introduces high residual stresses at the bend, which then is anodic and corrodes. (b) Because grain boundaries have a high energy, they are anodic and corrode.

Anodic Protection
Fairly new concept Used where cathodic protection is not practical, such as in strongly alkaline or acidic environments, anodic protection is a useful corrosion control technique. Basics formation of protective film through externally applied currents

Fahmi Mubarok

suitable for active-passive alloys (e.g. stainless steel, nickel alloys, titanium) requires a broad potential range for passivity need sizable/expensive electrical equipment risky if potential slips into the active/pitting region used often for very aggressive solutions when other methods fail, e.g. for protection of tanks storing of strong acids (e.g. sulphuric, phosphoric, nitric)

Advantage-disadvantage

Fahmi Mubarok

Cathodic
+ can be used for all metals installation cost is low corrosion rate can be reduced to zero

Anodic
can be used in extremely aggressive environment applied current is direct measure of corrosion rate operating conditions can be easily controlled operation cost low

can only be used in weak only applicable to active-passive to moderate environment metals operating conditions must installation cost is high be determined by empirical testing.
