Needed by me: Today I feel Silly book, emotion book lists, emotion bookmarks, 7 books (1 from each list) for booktalking Needed by students: Nothing Instructional Procedures: Focusing Event: I will ask the children about how theyre feeling today. Ill ask one or two of them to share a short story about a time when they felt a particular emotion. Input from You: I will read Today I feel Silly: And Other Moods that Make my Day by Jamie Lee Curtis. Throughout the book, Ill invite the children to participate by raising their hand if theyve ever felt the emotion that Im currently reading about. Once I am finished with the book, I will do a quick booktalk on one book from each of the lists Ive cr eated. Guided Practice: I will ask the children to define synonym and antonym and have them come up with several of these as I go through the book lists Ive created . This will allow them to think about different words to describe their emotions. Closure: I will end the lesson by reminding the students that its okay to feel certain ways. I will ask them to remember where they can find different kinds of books in the library. I will also remind them that both myself and Mrs. Cahill can help find books (and might know some new ones) that arent on the lists, especially since each list has only about 8-10 books, but there are hundreds of students at Carrie Busey. Check for Understanding: For understanding about library layout, I will ask them questions about where they can find certain types of books and have them point to the section to answer. As theyre offering up synonyms or antonyms, I will make sure they are giving good answers and if theyre not, Ill suggest other words to help them make the comparisons. Whats Next: Making sure the lists are in a visible space where the students can find them easily. Future lessons on the Dewey decimal system as well as library organization.
