Word formation: adjectives As previously explained, adjectives have the value of giving extra information about the noun

or pronoun they modify. In this lesson, we are going to see how we can make adjectives from other words we know. This is going to be by adding suffixes . what is a suffix? A suffix is a word ending that consists of a letter or group of letters that we attach to the end of a word to change its meaning or grammatical category. Examples: a/ care -> careful / careless (adjective suffixes) b/ modern -> modernity (noun suffixes) c/ visual -> visualize (verb suffixes) As in the examples above, the endings in red colour are all suffixes, but they belong to different word categories (which we will cover later on). Most common adjective suffixes: Suffixes -able / -ible -al -an -ed -ese -ful -ic -ish -less -ous -y -en -ive -ent -ant -ary -ory Examples lovable / edible magical / visual Italian / crooked / hooked Chinese / Japanese helpful / cheerful poetic / heroic boyish / childish homeless / useless dangerous / outrageous funny / sunny golden / wooden active / persuasive resident / resistant / hesitant obligatory /
