Samantha Ferreyra Art/ Ms. Roseth Period: 5 20 February 2013 Salvador Dali A painter, filmmaker, and a writer describes the famous Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dali y Domenech. He was born on May 11, 1904 and had a gift with drawing ever since he was eight years old. Dali had an older brother that died at the age of one due to gastroenteritis. Then in 1912, Felipa, Salvadors mother, died of breast cancer while he was sixteen years old. In 1916, Dali attended drawing school at Calegio de Hermanos Maristos and The Instituto in Figueres, Spain. He was an odd student standing out with messed up hair and mismatching clothes. Dali had his first public exhibition in 1919 at the Municipal Theater in Figueres, Spain. In the 1920s, he began his own practice of Cubism from the creator Picasso ("KRISTINA BAATZ ON SALVADOR DALI."). Later on in 1922, Dali enrolled in the Academia de San Fernando in Madrid, Spain and dressed more appropriately to fit in. He got suspended in that school due to a riot, but then made two films with Luis Bunuel in 1929. By 1929, Dali found his own style that made him famous and that was the world of his recalled dreams. He used his dreams to paint his paintings. Soon after in August of 1929, he met Helena Dmitrievna Diakonova and she later became his wife on in 1934. To evade World War II, he stayed in the United States and became very popular in the 1940s. In the 1940s and 1950s, he focused on religious themes and showed his own method of it. He played a role as a surrealist clown in a movie that caught the attention of the media. In 1948, Dali returned back to Spain and was inspired by science magazines and

classical masters of painting. He then began his series of large paintings in 1958. He continued painting until 1980 when he got a motor disorder called Palsy that didnt allow him to paint any more ("Salvador Dali."). In 1982, Dalis wife died and he moved to Pubol, Spain. Soon after in 1984, Dali was burned and was forced into a wheelchair for the rest of his life. He later died on January 23, 1989 when he had heart failure. During Dalis life, there were many movements going on which include Cubism, Dadaism, and Surrealism. Cubism was an art movement started by George Braque and Pablo Picasso. It was the first abstract art style ever used that contained abstract shapes and unnatural perspective. Dada or Dadaism was sort-of an art movement, but created non-art. The main influences in creating Dadaism were Abstraction and Expressionism followed by Cubism. They were against World-War II so as a way of protest they created non-art. They went against traditional art and were responsible in creating Surrealism. Surrealism started in Europe by poet Andre Brenton that wanted to combine the subconscious and conscious. In this movement, it was suppose to be considered art and used many techniques from the Dada movement. Its techniques including floating objects, dislocation, optical illusions, transparency, distortion of scale, and many more. Dali was also the most impactful artist during the Surrealist movement. Dalis artwork was unique due to his creation of The Paranoiac Critical Method. He developed a process that allowed him to view the world and make a different interpretation of it. Using The Paranoiac Critical Method let Dali to create his famous artwork and change the art world once again. He also used the politics and religion into his surrealist style. He didnt just use Surrealism, but also used Cubism and Expressionism in some of his early works. Dali is one of the most important artists during the Surrealist movement because of the way he was able to change the whole idea of it and create something unseen before. He made people question his

work because they didnt understand what was happening. As a result, he inspired many more artists including Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, and many others to do their own work of art. During his 60 year career, he painted over 1,700 works. He didnt just paint, but also appeared on television, wrote a book called The Secret Life of Salvador Dali, and wrote films with other famous filmmakers. Dalis most famous works are The Persistence of Memory (1931), Millets Architectonic Angelus (1933), The Invisible Man (1929), The Face of War (1941), and many more ("Most 10 Of Everything | 10 Most Famous Salvador Dali Artworks."). The Persistence of Memory (1931) is one of his best known works that describes Dalis many ways thinking ( l

the Reality of Dreams). The real interpretation of the painting is unknown, but some suggest it means Einsteins theory of time. Others say the clock watches mean the loss of time that happens during sleep as the memories are remembered. Whatever Dali was trying to describe from his dream, he made his best work ever that confuses many people till this day. Dali continually shocked the world with his creative mind that caused him a large amount of controversy. Many people found his paintings too graphic or went against their belief. His art style was caused by his rich imagination in his dreams. His dreamlike illusions were depicted in many of his paintings that got him very famous especially in the United States ("The Unique Style of Salvador Dali).Throughout the day, Salvador Dali would take midday rests so he could get more dreams. He considered this state as a way to forget about ones body or the state of the conscious. The themes in his career involve the study of the subconscious and his childhood desires. His legacy will live on and questions of his work will continue, but his work will remain to inspire others in the future.
