2. Lesson Proper Quick Survey Family survey: Family Survey Name: Do you. _____ Live with your parents? _____ Live with extended family (ex. Grandparents/aunt/uncle) _____ Parents Separated Please bring out your survey forms. Now, we will tally your answers on the board.

Choices Living with parents Living with extended family Parents are separated

Tally (The tallies will vary)

You might ask what this is for. These data might tell us many things. For example, it might give us information as to why some students perform better in class. It might also tell us why some students fail to perform well in school. Those who are living with their parents most probably have more guidance than those who live with their grandparents. And those who have separated parents have emotional problems due to the separation of their parents. Now, how do we relate this to math? Did you know that we were using statistics? Now what is statistics?

(Visual Aids) Statistics - the study of the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation and presentation of data. Please read. Like in our family survey, we collected data with you answering the question, we organized the data when we tallied your answers and we analyzed and interpreted the data when we used it to find out why some students are performing well or not. In statistics we always talk about data. Fr m our song, what do we do to data? Data is (Visual Aids) Data the numerical values that the variables assume. Please Read. Data is used to describe information mathematically. An example is our Family survey; we have variables such as living with parents, living with extended family and separated parents. But those variables have no numerical value. The data there is our tally, the number of students that are under these choices. Statistics stresses in the analysis and interpretation of data. The analysis and interpretation of the data may help many people in their decision makings. For example: Take this graph. S: the values that the variables assume. S: Collect, Analyze, Interpret and Present.

S: The study of the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation and presentation of data.

(Acts as a tourist) Ah! I hear the Philippines is very beautiful. But I cant decide on when I will spend my holiday there. Now may I ask you, when will it be best to go to the Philippines to enjoy the nice, warm weather? Yes. Thank you for that brilliant suggestion.

This kind of graph is called a Bar Graph. A Bar Graph is (Visual Aids) Bar Graph A graph drawn using rectangular bars to show how large each value is. Please Read. As you can see, the height of each bar denotes the amount of rainfall in millimeters (mm). The higher the bar the greater the rainfall. S: A graph drawn using rectangular bars to show how large each value is. S: January up to April.

And now back to business. Before I get to go on my vacation, the president has asked me to monitor the employment rate of the country. As you can see in the chart.

Employment Rate 2011

22% Not Employed Self Employed Employed

58%

20%

What can you say about the data in the chart? How many percent is the difference between those who are employed and those that are unemployed? S: Answers may vary from: The biggest is employed The least is self employed S: 36%

22% is still a big number for un employment; this will help the president to further his development on the employment rate of the country. This kind of chart is called a pie graph. A pie graph is (Visual Aids) Pie Graph - is a circular chart divided into sectors, illustrating proportion.

Employment rate 2011 is an example of a pie graph. This is divided into sectors that are appropriate in accordance to the data or percentage given. Now the president is asking me the comparison of the employment of the males and females of the country in the span of five years.

60 50 40 30 Female 20 10 0 Male

Employment to population ratio ages 15-24 What can you say about this data? Notice that there is no significant change in the past 5 years of the employment of males and females. The president would be both pleased and disappointed. There is no significant drop in the employment rate of the whole population however there we can see that only around 50% of males and 30% of females are employed in the country. This means that 50% of the male populous and 70% of the females in the country is unemployed. This type of graph is called a line graph. A line graph is. (Visual Aids) Line Graph - is a type of chart which displays information as a series of data points connected by straight line segments. Please Read. This kind of graph is best to compare two or more kinds of data. For example, we have the employment S: is a type of chart which rate for male and women. The lines of data that are displays information as a being compared have different colors. series of data points connected by straight line To sum it up, you will need to know what the S: The male employment is higher than of the female.

USES OF STATISTICS 1) Statistics helps in providing a better understanding and exact description of a phenomenon of nature. (2) Statistical helps in proper and efficient planning of a statistical inquiry in any field of study. (3) Statistical helps in collecting an appropriate quantitative data. (4) Statistics helps in presenting complex data in a suitable tabular, diagrammatic and graphic form for an easy and clear comprehension of the data. (5) Statistics helps in understanding the nature and pattern of variability of a phenomenon through quantitative observations.

3. Generalization What is statistics? S: Statistics is the study of the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation and presentation of data. S: Data is the numerical values that the variables assume. S: Bar, Pie and Line graphs.
