oreword

This practice book is designed for the 12th grade pupils with the aim to
enable them to engage in their own analyses of knowledge and comprehension
of the English language.
The book includes 20 tests. Each test is organized into 4 parts:
Part I deals with Text Comprehension, containing an unknown text and 5
activities following it;
Part II treats Grammar and Vocabulary. It includes a test that sums up all
the pupils have learnt in previous years.
Part III deals with Civilization Topics.
Part IV consists of Written Production.
The activities suggested in the book, which are suitable for in-class work
or as pupils homework, will make the learners time informative, enjoyable and
creative. Clear notes explain the tasks to be accomplished. Through the reading
and post-reading exercises pupils will certainly absorb more information as they
learn, review, and retain concepts getting ready for the exam.
We hope this brochure, that is an up-to-date reference concerning exams,
will help pupils to sum up all they have learnt in the previous years, giving
them a chance to check their progress and at the same time prepare for the BAC
exam.

Facebook phenomenon
Facebook was originally named The Face Book and it was developed by Harvard student
Mark Zuckerberg. The first use of the Face Book was on the Harvard campus and it was limited
only to Harvard students. Soon the Face Book spread like wild fire around the other major U.S.
Universities. Mark Zuckerberg dropped the Harvard and pursued his facebook dream to become one
of the 4th most-trafficked websites in the world with more than 90 million active users.
Moving the company headquarters to Silicon Valley and becoming a billionaire on paper,
Mark is often compared with other Harvard college dropout entrepreneurs and innovators such as
Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. The spirits of Silicon Valley have taken notice, and lately Mr.
Zuckerberg has been offered a variety of deals.
Interesting fact is that the facebook.com domain was purchased for $200,000 and now the total
value of the company is worth more than $15 billion. As of 2007, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has
become an instant billionaire; according to some sources he owns approximately 30% of the company
and this equals more than $4 billion of total net worth. Forbes ranked him the youngest billionaire at 23
years old, and he is certainly one of the wealthiest 20-something of the world.
Facebook has eventually become everything more than a social network. It helps you not
only connect with your friends but also creates a huge knowledge pool and discussion forum using
the vast number of features it provides. There are over 250 million registered users on Facebook of
which 125 million login for at least once almost daily. Over 1 billion photos and 10 million videos
are uploaded to Facebook each month.
Everyone is welcome to join social networking sites and can easily claim to be someone they
are not. Some individuals have expressed feeling 'rude' if they do not except a friend request, even if
they do not recognise the person. It is impossible to screen strangers on social networking sites, however
it is possible to report any inappropriate messaging, and any specific person that a member does not
want contacting them can block the intruder, rendering them unable of accessing the members profile.
By 2005, the use of Facebook had already become so ubiquitous that the generic verb
"facebooking" had come into use to describe the process of browsing others' profiles or updating
one's own. In 2008, Collins English Dictionary declared "Facebook" as their new Word of the Year.
Books, movies, TV shows and debates where created especially to present the Facebook
phenomenon to the whole world.
Nowadays generation is caught in this unique and surreal space where, through things like
Facebook, we can explode the wonder of times past and freshen memories of friendships and social
relationships that aren't so far removed from our identities that we wouldn't find meaning in
dredging them up and restoring them.

I. Read the text and accomplish the post-reading tasks.
Stereotypes
Stereotypes are generalizations about a group of people whereby we attribute a defined set
of characteristics to this group. We develop stereotypes when we are unable or unwilling to obtain
all of the information we would need to make fair judgments about people or situations. In the
absence of the "total picture," stereotypes in many cases allow us to "fill in the blanks." Our society
often innocently creates and perpetuates stereotypes, but these stereotypes often lead to unfair
discrimination and persecution when the stereotype is unfavorable.
These classifications can be positive or negative, such as when various nationalities are
stereotyped as friendly or unfriendly. It is easier to create stereotypes when there is a clearly visible
and consistent attribute that can easily be recognized. This is why people of color, police and
women are so easily stereotyped.
People from stereotyped groups can find this very disturbing as they experience an apprehension
(stereotype threat) of being treated unfairly.
We change our stereotypes infrequently. Even in the face of disconfirming evidence, we often cling
to our obviously-wrong beliefs.
Stereotyping can go around in circles. Men stereotype women and women stereotype men.
The same thing happens with different racial groups, such as 'white/black' (an artificial system of
opposites, which in origin seems to be more like 'European/non-European').
Stereotyping can be subconscious, where it subtly biases our decisions and actions, even in people
who consciously do not want to be biased. Stereotyping often happens not so much because of
aggressive or unkind thoughts. It is more often a simplification to speed conversation on what is not
considered to be an important topic.
To change a persons view of your stereotype, be consistently different from it. Beware of
your own stereotyping blinding you to the true nature of other individuals.
Understanding the nature of prejudice, scapegoating, stereotypes, and discrimination is the first step
in combating these practices. All of us have prejudices about members of groups different from
ourselves. We should, however, recognize that we are not acting fairly if we treat people differently
because of these stereotypes and prejudices. Each one of us deserves to be considered a unique
human being.
All of us face peer pressure when confronted with a joke which puts down a certain
minority. It takes courage to raise objections to these jokes and pejorative names and to actively
fight the prejudice and bigotry which they foster. It is important to stand up against injustice, and
fight the discrimination, stereotypes, and scapegoating which have served as the precursors to
persecution, violence, and genocide.

Whats it all about?

The universe is eternal. It has always existed, and always will. But life is not. It comes into
existence, lives for a period of time, and then goes out of existence. You and I had no choice about
being born, and we have no choice about eventually ceasing to exist. But between birth and death,
there are a lot of choices to be made. The purpose of morality is to guide us in those choices.
All life forms have one fundamental goal to remain alive. And to remain alive requires action
action to acquire those things which will sustain life. Those things are values. A plants values
include water and minerals, and it acts to acquire these values, or it dies. A herbivores values
include plants. A carnivores values include meat. All life forms must acquire values, or cease to exist.

Different life forms have different abilities that enable them to acquire values. The cheetah has
the ability to run fast; almost all birds have the ability to fly. And man man has the ability to
think. In order to think, one must have something to think about one can not think about
nothing. That something to think about is reality. We do not live in a void; we live on earth in the
real world. In order to survive, we must get a grip on reality and realize that the pursuit and creation
of values is good and their destruction is evil.
The pursuit, achievement and maintenance of values is a life long pursuit, but since mans
lifespan is limited, he must limit the number of values he will pursue he can not be everything
there is to be nor possess all there is to possess. So, each man must choose those values that hold
the best promise in his pursuit of happiness.
He must choose a career he can not pursue all careers. He must choose what food to eat he can
not eat all the food on earth. It is the responsibility of each man to choose the values he will pursue and his
responsibility to prioritize them from the most important to the least important. Each man must get it
clear in his own mind the relative importance of each value to all others.
In the pursuit of happiness, it is only the pursuit of rational values, properly prioritized, that can
hold any promise of success. And each individual must make his own choices alone with his own
thoughts. It is not to be left up to Jesus or Muhammad, a teacher or a preacher, parents or friends, or
what one might think others think. Each individual must make his own choices.
Whats it all about? Its about being a good person rational, productive, honest, responsible,
reliable Its about building the foundation of happiness about being a person worthy of
happiness and making the effort to pursue, achieve, maintain, and prioritize ones values. Its not
always easy, but one makes the effort, makes it each and every day because happiness is a value
worth pursuing.

The Yin Yang significance
The ancient Chinese people subscribe to a concept called Yin Yang which is a belief that
there exist two complementary forces in the universe. One is Yang which represents everything
positive and the other is Yin which is characterized as negative. One is not better than the other.
Instead they are both necessary and a balance of both is highly desirable. This thinking is different
from the duality of most religion where one state overcomes the other e.g. good over evil. In the
concept of Yin Yang, too much of either one is bad. The ideal is a balance of both. The hot Saharan
desert for example is an example of extreme Yang while the bitter cold Antarctica is extreme Yin.
Neither is desirable. There is a perception (especially in the West) that yin and yang correspond to
good and evil. However, Taoist philosophy generally discounts good/bad distinctions as superficial
labels, preferring to focus on the idea of balance.
This is a philosophy that reflects humans personality as well. Yang contracts to produce
density, gravity, heat, and activity while yin expands to produce diffusion, lightness, cold, and
quiescence. The yang personality is active, commanding, concentrated, and fiery while the yin
personality is more inclusive, diffuse, gentle, tranquil, and magnetic. If you are constitutionally yin
then you will naturally express yourself more through your thoughts. As such, good occupations for
yin persons include research, scholarship, teaching, writing, and all other activities that require
mental exertion. On the other hand, if you are constitutionally yang then you will naturally express
yourself more through your actions. Yang occupations include business, sales, travel, sports,
performing arts, engineering, mechanics, the armed services, police, and all other indoor and
outdoor activities that require physical exertion.
In a nutshell, Chinese Yin Yang symbols represent perfect balance. Seemingly, the whole of
Chinese philosophy stems from the concept of Yin and Yang opposites interacting and
supposedly the seed of all things. For example, evil results from an imbalance in Yin and Yang, and
good comes from the two being in harmonic balance.

Building healthy relationships
Speak a little less, listen a little more. Most people get tremendous pleasure from speaking
about themselves. But, here we have to be careful; if we always speak about our achievements or
tribulations, people will get fed up with our egoism. If you find you are always talking about
yourself, consider the advice of the Greek philosopher, Epictectus: Nature gave us one tongue and
two ears so we could hear twice as much as we speak.
Which is more important being right or maintaining harmony? A lot of problems in
relationships occur because we want to maintain our personal pride. Dont insist on always having
the last word. Healthy relationships are not built through winning meaningless arguments. Be
willing to back down; most arguments are not of critical importance anyway.
If we value someones friendship we will not take pleasure in commenting on their frequent
failings. They will eventually hear about it. But, whether we get found out or not, we weaken our
relationships when we dwell on negative qualities. Avoid gossiping about anybody;
subconsciously we dont trust people who have a reputation for gossip. We instinctively trust and
value people who dont feel the need to criticise others.
Forgiveness is not just a clich, its a powerful and important factor in maintaining healthy
relationships. However, real forgiveness also means that we are willing to forget the experience. If
we forgive one day, but then a few weeks later bring up the old misdeed, this is not real
forgiveness. When we make mistakes, just consider how much we would appreciate others
forgiving and forgetting.
If you think a friend has a bad or unworkable idea, dont always argue against it; just keep
silent and let them work things out for themselves. Its a mistake to always feel responsible for
their actions. You can offer support to friends, but you cant live their life for them.
If you view friendship from the perspective of what can I get from this? you are making a
big mistake. This kind of relationship proves very tentative. If you make friendships with the hope
of some benefit, you will find that people will have a similar attitude to you. This kind of
friendship leads to insecurity and jealousy. Furthermore, these fair weather friends will most likely
disappear just when you need them most. Dont look upon friends with the perspective what can I
get out of this? True friendship should be based on mutual support and good will, irrespective of
any personal gain.

13

Dont take yourself too seriously. Be willing to laugh at yourself and be self-deprecating.
This does not mean we have to humiliate ourselves, far from it it just means we let go of our
ego. Humour is often the best antidote for relieving tense situations.

Coco Chanel
Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street,
fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.
Named as one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century, legendary designer
Coco Chanel was a pioneer in the world of fashion. Her kind of fashion was inspired by mens wear
and she believed in simple yet highly expensive designs. Born in Samur, Southern France in 1883

15

in a poorhouse to traveling salesman Albert Chanel and Jeanne Devolle, Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel
has made a bold and lasting impression on many.
When Coco (Gabrielle adopted "CoCo" during a brief career as a singer in cafe's and concert
halls between 1905-1908) was just twelve years old her mother died, leaving her father to care for
the six children. He left a short time later, and for the next seven years Coco was in the orphanage
of the Catholic monastery of Aubazine. During school vacations female relatives, in the provincial
capital of Moulins, taught Coco how to sew much more elegant, than the nuns at the monastery
were able to teach.
At the age of eighteen, she left the orphanage and began work for a local tailor. While
working at the tailor shop she met Etienne Balsan, an English playboy, and began having an affair
with him. While Coco was living with Balsan, she began to design hats as a hobby. Her hats
quickly caught the attention of the female Parisian elite. Despite the fact that Chanel did not have
the breeding of the upper class, in 1909 she met the wealthy socialite, Arthur "Boy" Capel. With the
help of Balsan and Arthur Boy Capel, Coco was able to open her own millinery, or hat shop
called Chanel Models. It was located at 31 rue Cambon in Paris.
French actresses wore the hats Coco made. This helped her to get a reputation established. In
1913 at her new boutique in Deauville, France, Coco introduced her sportswear for women. But her
real break came in the early '20s during the Great Depression when Chanel, with the financial help
of Capel, opened her first and now legendary shop at 31 rue Cambon. Her elegant designs
revolutionized fashion replacing the corset with comfort and casual elegance. In 1922, she launched
the fragrance Chanel No. 5, which remains popular to this day. Two years later Pierre Wertheiner
became her partner (taking on 70% of the fragrance business), and reputedly her lover. Coco
launched her signature cardigan jacket in 1925, and the following year matched its success with her
little black dress. Both items continue to be a staple part of every Chanel collection.
During World War II, Coco was a nurse, although her post-war popularity was greatly
diminished by her affair with a Nazi officer during the conflict. However, she made her comeback
in 1954, her style much unchanged, apart from the introduction of pea jackets and bell-bottoms for
women. Coco Chanel worked until her death in 1971 at the age of 88.

The History of Waltz
The history of the Waltz, goes back further than many actually believe, right back to a very
simple form to 13th century Germany. The word waltz comes from the German word walzen
meaning to roll, glide or turn but by the 1500s the medieval Volta was danced and consisted of
many waltz like steps and movements combined with other forms. Napoleon's invading solders
spread the waltz from Germany to Paris; then the dance glided across the channel to England and
finally made its way to the United States.
When the Waltz was first introduced into the ballrooms of the world in the early years of the
nineteenth century, it was met with outraged indignation, for it was the first dance where the couple
danced in a modified closed position - with the man's hand around the waist of the lady.
There was still much opposition to this immoral dance. Funnily enough, Queen Victoria loved
the waltz and was an excellent ballroom dancer. Like most things though, the more the older
generation and the moral upper echelons complained about the waltz, the more popular it became.
Beginning about 1830, the waltz was given a tremendous boost by two Austrian composers
Lanner and Strauss. They set the standard for the Viennese Waltz, a very fast version played at
about 55 - 60 measures per minute. The fast tempo did indeed present problems. Much of the
enjoyment of the new dance was lost in the continual strain to keep up with the music.
During the later part of the nineteenth century, Waltzes were being written to a slower
tempo than the original Viennese rhythm. Around the close of the nineteenth century, two
modifications of the waltz developed in the United States, introduced by Boston dance master,
Lorenzo Papanti. The first was the "Boston", a slower waltz with long gliding steps; there were
fewer and slower turns and more forward and backward movement than in the Viennese Waltz.
This version eventually stimulated the development of the English or International Style which
continues today. The American Style Waltz is similar to the International Style. The second
modification was the "Hesitation Waltz", which involves taking one step to three beats of the
measure. Although the "Hesitation Waltz" is no longer danced, some of its step patterns are still in
use today.
Today both the faster Viennese Waltz, made forever popular by the Strauss family, and the
slower American and International style waltzes are extremely popular today with dancers of all
ages.

The Mystical 13
The fear of number 13 is called triskaidekaphobia and it was derived from treiskaideka, the
Greek word for thirteen and phobia. There is a common myth that the earliest reference to thirteen
being unlucky or evil is from the Babylonian Code of Hammurabi, where the thirteen law is
omitted. Some Christian traditions have it that at the Last Supper, Judas, the disciple who betrayed
Jesus, was the 13th to sit at the table. Ancient Persians believed the twelve constellations in the
Zodiac controlled the months of the year, and each ruled the earth for a thousand years at the end of
which the sky and earth collapsed in chaos. Therefore, the thirteenth is identified with chaos and the
reason Persians leave their houses to avoid bad luck on the thirteenth day of the Persian Calendar.
In 1881, an influential group of New Yorkers led by U.S. Civil War veteran Captain
William Fowler came together to put an end to this and other superstitions. They formed a dinner
cabaret club, which they called the Thirteen Club. At the first meeting, on Friday 13 January 1881
at 8:13 p.m., 13 people sat down to dine in room 13 of the venue. The guests walked under a ladder
to enter the room and were seated among piles of spilled salt. All of the guests survived and
Thirteen Clubs sprang up all over North America for the next 40 years.
The significance of thirteen, all are aware that it has come down to us as an unlucky number.
Hence, every occurrence of the number thirteen, and likewise of every multiple of it, stands in
connection with rebellion, disintegration, revolution, or some kindred idea. Some hotels skip
number thirteen when numbering rooms. In Formula 1, there is no car with the number 13.
Industrialist Henry Ford wouldnt do business on Friday, the 13th.
However, some consider thirteen number to be a lucky and good number. In ancient Greece
Zeus was counted as the thirteenth, and most powerful god. Here the associations of Zeus who gave
the number thirteen symbolic meanings such as: totality, completion, power. Also in Egypt, there
are thirteen steps upon the ladder that leads to eternity. Upon the thirteenth step it is said the soul
reaches the source of itself and attains spiritual completion. Moreover, the symbolic meaning of
number thirteen deals with moon associations such as: femininity, magic, emotion.
Therefore, the two-sided theory about number 13 gives us the possibility to freely decide
whether this mystical number has positive or negative effects upon our reality, whether we tend to
be optimistic or pessimists.

The European Court of Human Rights
The European Court of Human Rights aims to apply and to protect the civil and political
rights of the continent's citizens. The court, which was set up in 1959 in the French city of
Strasbourg, considers cases brought by individuals, organizations and states against the countries
which are bound by the convention; namely, all European nations except Belarus.
These cases have many forms; they include allegations of human rights abuses,
discrimination, the improper conduct of trials and the mistreatment of prisoners. Countries must
comply with the court's verdicts, although the court cannot directly enforce this.
Most of the nations which have signed the human rights convention, including the UK, have
incorporated its principles into their own laws. The court will only hear a case when all domestic
legal avenues have been exhausted. The court was established and is overseen by the Council of
Europe, a pan-European human rights body.
The Court president is Jean-Paul Costa, a French judge. The court is made up of 46 judges,
equating to the number of countries that have signed up to the European Human Rights Convention.
The judges are elected to six-year terms by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
They sit as individuals, rather than as representatives of their home countries.
The court has seen its case load grow rapidly, from just under 6,000 cases in 1998 to almost
14,000 by 2001. In 2006 it received more than 50,000 new requests to judge cases. Much of this

22

increase has come from the newer democracies of central and Eastern Europe, where there is less
trust in local judicial systems. Russia is the biggest single source of cases.
It can take years for the judges to reach a final verdict. A backlog of cases - running to
90,000 in early 2007 - has prompted calls for more judges to be appointed and for the courts
functions to be streamlined, especially for minor cases.
The court has been described by the head of the Council of Europe as a victim of its own
success.

Build a Successful Online Career by Advertising.
Any successful business, whether online or offline, is involved in some form of advertising.
Not all businesses use the same methods of advertising, however, the concept and basic principles
of advertising will apply whether you're a store front on Main Street in your own home town, or an
online marketer promoting on the internet. Advertising is crucial to the growth of your business.
Maintaining a stable, advertising campaign strategy is one of the most important ingredients of
maintaining a healthy growth for your company.

24

Getting potential customers is the hardest part of an Internet marketing job. Remember that
the success of your Internet marketing business will depend on how you will attract potential clients
coming from the majority of traffic around the Internet, how you build your customers base that
will keep your marketing career alive. Even if you have a well-designed website with practical
facilities such as information catalogs and shopping cart services, once you failed to attract large
web traffic towards your site, your Internet marketing business will be of whole breakdown.
For this reason, you must learn the whereabouts of Internet marketing promotion and
advertising. Promoting and advertising your Internet marketing is fundamental to your website and
to your job as well. Through these strategies, you will be able to attract motivated people who are
willing to buy whatever you are offering.
Make certain that your promotion and advertising tools possess these characteristics:
It must have a long-lasting effect. Do not just use an advertising medium once and discard it.
Find ways on how you will be able to make use of it for several times. You may make use of a
similar tactic on each advertising tool and create customer familiarity with the advertising tool as
well as the product or service you are advertising.
An effectual Internet marketing promotion and advertising have variations. Change the
color, text, and the message of your advertisements but do not modify its feature character.
Do not be afraid to explore new options. The more you broaden your promotion and
advertising efforts, you will be able to do well in your Internet marketing business career.
Marketing on line is an ongoing challenge of experimentation and learning the process of what
works and doesn't work effectively. Every marketing campaign that you do is going to be different,
and flexibility in your thought process here is extremely crucial.
Advertising is an absolute must with any store front business; however, marketing strategies
must be used in your online marketing efforts. Choose the method of marketing promotion
strategies that best fits your marketing objectives, and fills the needs of your targeted audience.
Seek the services of a specialist if needed and be willing to make changes that your professional
recommends that may be required to optimize your marketing efforts and challenges.

E- Shopping
Online shopping is a multi billion business and is constantly growing. Many individuals
favour this kind of shopping because of ease. For shoppers who work for lengthy hours, it would be
hard to visit a store during standard trade hours. Online retailers allow orders twenty four hours a
day and shoppers can easily shop from their place of convenience and whenever they have free
moment available. As well, online shopping gives the shopper the facility to compare the products
with easiness. This prevents the bother of visiting different conventional stores and finding difficult
to remember details like cost and features. Online shopping is predominantly useful for those with
limited mobility as they can shop with out any difficulty.
Some items may only be available in certain locations of the country and this makes
comparing the prices difficult for traditional high street shoppers. By online shopping, products
from around the world can be purchased, by comparing details and price of the items. An item
which is a regional speciality can be bought online without going in person to that location. Online
shoppers can send gifts to family members or friends as a surprise. It also saves the time of buying
the gifts in high street, packing it carefully and shipping the gift.
While there are numerous advantages of online shopping there are some hassles and fear
regarding them. Identity theft is the most key worry for those who fear about online shopping.
However ,if the client is unsure about the security there is always a choice of calling customer
service to leave the order. One more worry is about dealing with returns. In majority of cases the
returns procedure with online retailers is quite easy like returning the product to traditional store.
But some time the shopper will be financially liable for the cost of shipping the product back to the
online vendor. This can be expensive if the product is oversize. Another problem of online shopping
is encountering misleading product information or shopper buying a wrong item. The simplest
solution is to contact the customer service to verify whether or not the product for sale will suit your
needs. Carefully read the fine print before you make a purchase.
But the above problems are almost fully avoided if you shop in reputed online retailers
These retailers have secure web sites and concern about identity theft is almost nil. In addition they
have dedicated servers and make every effort to load the web pages within ten seconds. In addition
the prices are much cheaper, as they sell products directly from the warehouses. Online shopping in
reputable sites will not only safe and secure, they also give the pleasure of high street shopping at
your home.

Rules for Master Negotiators
A negotiation is an interactive communication process that may take place whenever we
want something from someone else or another person wants something from us.
"Take it or leave it!" ,"This proposal is non-negotiable", "This is it. If you don't want to
accept it at that price, forget it.", "Negotiating with you is a waste of time. If you react negatively
to ultimatums, inflexibility, and statements like those , you may come to the realization that other
people feel the same way. Unless you are in the military, or subject to some similar hierarchical
organization, you will conclude that, if you want to have a relationship with the party on the other
side of the table or the other end of the phone, you must negotiate. Negotiation is unavoidable.
Most of us negotiate with one another frequently. Once we realize this, theoretically, we
have two choices: accept the fact that negotiation is a way of life in our culture and improve our
skills so that we can negotiate with confidence; or, do nothing about it. Some may argue that
negotiation is an art, that it is intuitive; or, that we all know how to negotiate, learning basic skills
on the playgrounds of life. Perhaps there are naturally gifted negotiators. But, as a lawyer and a
mediator who has spent over 20 years litigating, negotiating settlements, negotiating transactions
for clients, and negotiating personal transactions, it can be attested the fact that a lot of negotiators
are not naturally gifted. Negotiations commonly follow a four-step path: preparation, information
exchange, explicit bargaining, and commitment. Negotiation is, in short, a kind of universal dance
with four stages or steps. And it works best when both parties are experienced dancers. Many
attributes go into making a skillful negotiator, including such things as having a good memory,
being 'quick verbally', and handling stress well. But effectiveness is as much a matter of attitude as
it is of ability.
Master Negotiators develop strategies for each phase of the negotiation process: opening,
middle game, and end game. Like master chess players, they come to the table knowing how they
are going to open. They understand that, from there, strategies have to be flexible because how their
opponents respond to opening offers is unpredictable. Nevertheless, they plan ahead as much as
possible.
Any Method of Negotiation may be fairly judged by some criteria: it should produce a wise
agreement, it should be efficient and it should improve or at least not damage the relationship
between the parties. A wise agreement can be defined as one that meets the legitimate interests of
each side to the extent possible, resolves the conflicting interests fairly and is durable.

Ways to nurture social relationships
Human beings are social creatures. However, most of us require some coaching in order to
interact effectively with people in our life. One of the most important skills you can develop to be
successful in your professional life is to be successful in nurturing and growing relationships. Time
spent on this activity will create lasting benefits for everyone. So, there are some important ways
you can tend to these relationships so that both you and they can succeed to your highest
aspirations.
It is said that you are only as good as your word therefore, always keep your word. If a
person is known as reliable and keeps his promises he will earn the respect of others and polish his
reputation to a rich sheen. When a person does what he says. Others know that he is someone to be
counted on and this reinforces a persons self-respect. Another way which guarantees a successful
social relationship is treating others with respect and appreciating those around you. Do not take
anyone for granted, honor everyones contributions and acknowledge the role they play in your life.
It is of paramount importance to pay attention to peoples priorities as well and not just to our own.
So, we must treat people around us worthy of consideration. Additionally, for being in comfort with
you and the others, forgive when necessary. As long as people put forth their best effort and
conduct themselves honorably, one must make room for the occasional error, show empathy and
compassion.

31

Each of us feels a connection with someone else. This connection fluctuates in direct
proportion to how much you give versus how much you take. Connections come in many forms. On
one hand we need to connect with people on things that matter to them. This, of course, starts with
caring. We also can make connections for people with other people. Once you know their interests
and needs, you can introduce them to others, connect them to resources and/or connect them to
anything else that would help them.
Therefore, nurture a social relationship by making it easy to people to interact with you.
Listen to their needs and wants, build loyalty and trust which in turn will make you a valuable
person. Look for opportunities to show your trust, knowing that people tend to live up to the trust
placed in them. Will you occasionally be disappointed? Sure. But will you build relationships
further and faster in every other situation (and perhaps even in the relationship where you are
disappointed)? Absolutely.
If you want to nurture relationships, you have to sincerely care about people, their thoughts
and feelings, and their well being. It is often said: People dont care how much you know, until
they know how much you care. Your professional expertise and knowledge matters, of course, but
keep it in perspective.

Test 14
I. Read the text and accomplish the post-reading tasks.
Academic qualification ensures success in life
The definition of success differs from person to person and field to field. One could take
economic success as a touchstone to label a person successful in life, whereas others may look at
the capacity for overcoming challenges making the person a successful one. Whether one is
proposing marriage, applying for a job or looking for a new business partner, the first thing people
ask is, "what do you do?" In other words they judge you by your academic qualifications. No biodata rsum or curriculum vitae is acceptable without the inclusion of education qualifications.
Therefore it is an unannounced rule of the social world that a man's acquisition of academic
qualifications is a giant leap towards opportunities in every walk of life.
Academic qualifications ensure you have the basics in learning. If your basic grounding in
Maths, Science and Languages is strong, you can get success in life because mastering these
subjects allows you to calculate, to innovate and to communicate. These essentials for success
cannot be learnt without professional help in schools, colleges and universities. And in order to
prove that someone has acquired this knowledge, they are tested. If their learning is satisfactory,
then they are given a certificate to indicate their competence an academic qualification. There
may be a few people like Bill Gates and others who have made it, in spite of their drop-out
background and lack of academic qualifications, but can this be generalized? Should one tell his
child to leave schooling because if Bill Gates can do it they can also do it? A few exceptions cannot
be taken as a general rule.
An academic education gives people a rounded experience of life, with opportunities to meet
people from a wide range of backgrounds and to consider the importance in life of values and
culture. These are necessary things required to label a person successful in all aspects of life. More
broadly, widespread further education makes us a civilized nation. It uplifts our morals and ethics
by exposing us to the great thinkers of the past. It makes us aware of our rights and liberties, and
helps entrench a liberal democracy with active citizens and a lively media. However, on the other
hand, success is not getting a grade or a degree. If that was it then why aren't all the graduates from
Harvard, Oxford or Cambridge uniformly successful?
The rule of success is hard work and destiny of course. If a student of engineering gets good
grades but he is not practically effective in relationship-buildings and solving crises or proper
planning, even though he may be successful in getting a job but it will not lead him far. On the way
he is sure to fade out.
So qualifications alone are never enough, success depends upon physical characteristics,
personality, and a willingness to work hard.

Nostradamus
Michel de Nostredame (14 December or 21 December 1503 2 July 1566), usually latinised
to Nostradamus, was a French apothecary who published collections of prophecies that have since
become famous worldwide. He is best known for his book Les Propheties ("The Prophecies"), the
first edition of which appeared in 1555.
Nostradamus, the author of the famous Centuries, was an unusual man for his time. He was
a practicing physician, astronomer and astrologer who lived in the mid 16th century (1503 1566)
who turned his hand to prophecy later in life. Nostradamus wrote messages from the past to the
future in the form of short poems consisting of four lines each called Quatrains. In his lifetime
Nostradamus completed a total of 942 quatrains. His followers say he predicted the French
Revolution, the birth and rise to power of Hitler, and the assassination of John F. Kennedy. He also
predicted other events, such as the Great Fire of London (1666) and the exile of Napoleon to Alba,
the death of Lady Diana and the destruction of the Twin Towers on the 11th of September.
So, Nostradamus dedicated his life to writing long letters to world leaders warning them of
future events. The fact is that he was qualified as a magician according to the definitions of those
days, which was anyone who produced visions and predictions through scrying. Scrying was
considered to be a form of conjuring spirits and Nostradamus taught himself this skill by reading
ancient texts about Egyptian and Alexandrian magic. However, the Vatican decided that magicians
were evil and their activity was a crime punishable by death. Therefore, Nostradamus used a trick to
disguise his work which was scrambling the quatrains. This explains why when you read the
quatrains, he seems to be referring to incidents from all of the centuries at the same time.
The result of all of Nostradamus secret magical studies, pagan rituals, coding and conjuring
is the Ten Centuries. Each Century is one of the most cryptic longest and most poetic letters ever
written to citizens of the future. The quatrains consist of a mystic vision that was capable of
scanning events that would take place over thousands of years. The quatrains are in essence
missives from a prophet who was directly warning us of the apocalypse to come.

Ethics in Public Speaking
Often managers have to deliver presentations with unpleasant content. The vice president
has to announce that there is a hiring freeze or a downsizing. The human resource director speaks to
the employees about a benefits package with fewer benefits. Because executives are often speaking
in difficult situations, the more credibility they can develop, the more the content will be considered
and accepted. Speakers will have little or no impact on audiences if audience members don't respect
them and what they have to say.
What makes us trust a speaker or believe that he or she is a reliable source?
First, show respect for your audience. Don't insult your audience in any way. Racial slurs
and profanity are obviously unethical, but in addition, don't show disrespect for people's gender,
backgrounds, positions, appearances, or nationalities. Don't put people down because of their lack
of knowledge of a topic; sometimes their lack of information is the very reason you have been
asked to speak.
Second, choose topics that are consistent with your personal beliefs. Pick topics important to
you that you live out on a daily basis. You might be able to craft effective speeches advocating
views you do not agree with, but you will be much more effective and ethical if you advocate
opinions you actually hold. It is also very important to Respect the time of your audience. Know

38

what time you are expected to finish - and finish at that time. It is an insult to your audience
members and an abuse of your opportunity to speak to keep them ten, fifteen, or thirty minutes
more than what is expected of you.
Additionally, if you want your speech to be a success prepare for it. A lack of preparation
would scare even a seasoned professional speaker. And so, you will always feel more confident
when you know what to do and say. Thus, spend an appropriate amount of time planning your
presentation. Research the audience's expectations and prior knowledge by interviewing key
members of the audience.. Then, before you deliver the presentation, rehearse with a clock to make
sure you will finish within the allotted time.

GMO products
Our society has undergone many changes due to the worlds evolution, technological
advancement and the demographic boom. Demographic boom is one of the main causes of damage
we inflict on the planet which is interlinked with the poverty and hunger issues.
Among governmental policies and strategies to solve social issues scientists have stricken out in
new directions: the Genetically Modified Organisms and chemically treated food, as an essential
measure of prevention of hunger and malnutrition problems. Nonetheless, these products have generated
some criticism due to the fact that the healthcare system is exposed to some major risks. Therefore,
humanity is confronting a veritable social issue: how safe the food products are for our health.
Moreover, the Genetic Modification of food is an issue that has entered the mainstream media in a lot of
countries since a lot of food that we eat today contains genetically modified ingredients and usually
without our knowledge. The term GM foods or GMOs (genetically-modified organisms) is most
commonly used to refer to crop plants created for human or animal consumption using the latest
molecular biology techniques. These plants have been modified in the laboratory to enhance desired
traits such as increased resistance to herbicides or improved nutritional content. Future envisaged
applications of GMOs are diverse and include drugs in food, bananas that produce human vaccines
against infectious diseases such as Hepatitis B, metabolically engineered fish that mature more quickly,
fruit and nut trees that yield years earlier and plants that produce new plastics with unique properties.
Many people feel that genetic engineering is the inevitable wave of the future and that we
cannot afford to ignore a technology that has such enormous potential benefits. However, we must
proceed with caution to avoid causing unintended harm to human health and the environment as a
result of our enthusiasm for this powerful technology, so that not to face stories about genetic
engineering that would make headline news, such as: rice grown with human genes, meat from
cloned animals, sheep that are 15 percent human at the cellular level in hopes of using these animals
as human organ producing factories in the future.

Indigenous population Challenges
The cultures in the region and the Arctic indigenous peoples have adapted to its cold and
extreme conditions.
Due to the pole ward migration of the planet's isotherms (about 35 miles per decade during
the past 30 years as a consequence of global warming), the Arctic region (as defined by tree line
and temperature) is currently shrinking.[
The Arctic region is a focus of international political interest. International Arctic cooperation got
underway on a broad scale well over ten years ago. The International Arctic Science Committee
(IASC), hundreds of scientists and specialists of the Arctic Council, the Barents Euro-Arctic
Council and its regional cooperation have compiled high quality information on the Arctic.
The existing indigenous population in the circumpolar arctic region faces pressures on their
ways of life. They are therefore particularly vulnerable to increased immigration by non-indigenous
people as a result of industrial development, and to increased competition for resources.
Another problem local population faces is pollution, often carried by currents and winds from as far
away as Russia, Canada and even the United States. The Arctic is comparatively clean, although
there are certain ecologically difficult localized pollution problems that present a serious threat to
peoples health living around these pollution sources. Due to the prevailing worldwide sea and air
currents, the Arctic area is the fallout region for long-range transport pollutants, and in some places
the concentrations exceed the levels of densely populated urban areas. An example of this is the
phenomenon of Arctic haze, which is commonly blamed on long-range pollutants. Another example
is with the bioaccumulation of PCB's (polychlorinated biphenyls) in Arctic wildlife and people.
Pollutants end up in local wildlife, from seals, fish and whales, which then eventually make its way
into people.
A third and crucial problem that the fragile arctic region and its indigenous population and
wildlife are already facing is climate change. The Arctic sea ice is important in climate change: it
reflects most of the sunlight back out to space, thus minimizing excess heat being trapped. With
climate change and sea ice melting, there is less sunlight being reflected with more heat being
absorbed by the oceans and resulting in even faster warming. This could cause the Greenland ice
sheet melting which will actually increase sea levels. Possibly this will increase the melting of
permafrost in Siberia as well, which would release huge amounts of methane.
Satellite observations show the arctic sea ice decreasing, and projections for the rest of the century
predict even more shrinkage. Older members of the indigenous Inuit people describe how weather
patterns have shifted and changed in recent years, while they also face challenges to their way of
life in the form of increased commercial interest in the region. This combination of environmental
and economic factors makes indigenous population face unexpected challenges which determine
their loss of traditions, habits and integrity.

Biodiversity
The variety of life on Earth, its biological diversity is commonly referred to as biodiversity.
The number of species of plants, animals, and microorganisms, the enormous diversity of genes in
these species, the different ecosystems on the planet, such as deserts, rainforests and coral reefs are
all part of a biologically diverse Earth.
General interest in biodiversity has grown rapidly in recent decades, in parallel with the
growing concern about nature conservation generally, largely as a consequence of accelerating rates

45

of natural habitat loss, habitat fragmentation and degradation, and resulting extinctions of species.
The IUCN Red List estimates that 12-52% of species within well-studied higher taxa such as
vertebrates and vascular plants are threatened with extinction. Based on data on recorded
extinctions of known species over the past century, scientists estimate that current rates of species
extinction are about 100 times higher than long-term average rates based on fossil data. Other
plausible estimates suggest that present extinction rates now may have reached 1000 to 10,000
times the average over past geologic time. These estimates are the basis of the consensus that the
Earth is in the midst of the sixth mass extinction event in its history; the present extinction event is
termed the Holocene Mass Extinction.
Appropriate conservation and sustainable development strategies attempt to recognize this as
being integral to any approach. Almost all cultures have in some way or form recognized the importance
that nature, and its biological diversity has had upon them and the need to maintain it. Yet, power, greed
and politics have affected the precarious balance. Biodiversity boosts ecosystem productivity where
each species, no matter how small, all have an important role to play. For example, a larger number of
plant species means a greater variety of crops; greater species diversity ensures natural sustainability for
all life forms; and healthy ecosystems can better withstand and recover from a variety of disasters.
Moreover, a healthy biodiversity provides a number of natural services for everyone. And
these are Ecosystem services, Social benefits and Biological resources, such as food, medicinal
resources, breeding stocks and wood products. Unfortunately, it has long been feared that human
activity is causing massive extinctions. Despite increased efforts at conservation, it has not been
enough and biodiversity losses continue. A major report, the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment,
released in March 2005 highlighted a substantial and largely irreversible loss in the diversity of life
on Earth therefore The International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) maintains the
Red List to assess the conservation status of species, subspecies, varieties, and even selected
subpopulations on a global scale.

How is the banana industry affecting the environment?
Bananas are very ecologically demanding species. It pollutes the air, water, and land. Land
is cleared in order to make space for banana plantations, but because banana trees shed no natural
leaf litter to feed the soil, it depletes very quickly. Plantations are therefore forced to expand, and
the problems associated with banana production grow. Deforestation and unhealthy soil cause
erosion, and the runoff causes frequent flooding and damage from sedimentation. In a 1997 a study
done on the coast of Costa Rica, discovered that 60 percent of the coral reefs in Cahuita National
Park had been severely damaged due to runoff from coastal banana plantations.
Heavy pesticide use also causes problems. In an attempt to meet the demand for esthetically
perfect bananas, over 400 types of agrochemicals are used. In fact, more chemicals are used during
banana production than any other crop with the exception of cotton. These chemicals can lead to
sterility, cancer, and death. Insects become resistant to many of these pesticides, therefore stronger,
more toxic chemicals are needed. These chemicals affect mammals, birds, and plants, and the
biodiversity of the area quickly disappears. Pesticides also destroy the possibility for pioneer plant
species to grow, and the area dies.
Lastly, according to the World Wildlife Fund the banana industry produces more waste than
any other agricultural sector in the developing world. It is estimated that for every one ton of
bananas produced, there are two tons of waste. This waste includes industrial plastic bags that cover
the bananas during growing stages, the string that ties up these bags, and the containers the bananas
are carried in. Banana trees only bear fruit once in their lifetime, therefore once bananas are
cultivated, the tree is no longer useful, and goes to waste. Also, those 30 to 40 percent of bananas
that do not meet esthetic standards are thrown away. Most of this waste is poisoned with toxic
pesticides and harms the environment. Although international environmental standards have been
created in order to reduce these problems, many companies fail to follow them.
Some consumers in United States, Europe (in particular Switzerland) or Japan are willing to
buy fair-trade and organic bananas even if their cost is higher. They are ready to pay a premium
above the regular banana price if they are guaranteed that the bananas they are consuming are
produced under sound environmental and social conditions. The premium may go from 30% to 80%
of the normal banana price. Following these consumer demands, supermarkets are orientating their
banana business in this direction, with an increasing presence of this kind of products in their
outlets. The banana industry is therefore being pushed to move into fair-trade and organic banana
production. With their influence, consumers can help to increase environmental and social
sustainability in the export banana industry.
