Character Design Assignment For this assignment, you are required to design an anthropomorphic character of your own.

It can be a character that might appear in the Redwall universe (mouse/rat/hare etc) or an exotic animal, whatever you want. Feel free to base it on the character you worked on during our first two classes, or come up with an entirely different one if you would prefer. Once you have decided upon your character and his/her characteristics, you need to place that character into a situation that deals with racism or discrimination. Remember, this does not have to be set in the Redwall universe; if you want you could have your character being refused service at a restaurant based on their species, or bullied at school. The only hard set rules are your character must be an anthropomorphic animal of some kind, and the situation you put your character into must deal in some way with discrimination. The medium you choose is totally up to you as well. Anyway you feel you could get across the story in a interesting way is acceptable. Some examples of potential mediums are: Written story Poetry Comic strip (hand drawn or form online sources like bitstrips and readwritethink) Music Flash movie Movie using props/stuffed animals

There are many different mediums you can use. If you decide on one that is not listed above see me first, so you can explain your idea to me. I dont want to stifle you in anyway, I just want to help decide how feasible it is/if the timeframe is appropriate. After creating your scene with your

chosen medium, include a short, 250 word note explaining why you chose the particular medium, and how you felt it worked well with your idea. Rubric Level 1
Story is somehow portrayed that focuses on racism/ discrimination No attempt to portray the topic in the work

Level 2
Attempt is made to portray the topic, but handled poorly and the chosen medium is handled well Student produced work that shows some effort and creativity

Level 3
Clear understanding of the topics discussed in class, handled well in a chosen medium Strong level of creativity and effort, with some small areas of potential improvement Write up accurately and precisely explains students decision to work with the medium they chose Half a bonus

Level 4
Very strong level of comprehension of the topic, with a clear understanding of how to portray that in a chosen medium A high level of effort and creativity is visible throughout the work

Effort and Creativity

Minimal to zero effort shown with the work

Write up

Write is too short/not detailed enough to give an accurate idea of students thoughts

Bonus: for work that is outstanding or particularly impressive, and deserves a little extra

No bonus earned

Write up attempts to explain students choice for the medium, but requires more detail No bonus earned

Write up clearly and succinctly shows why the given medium was the best decision Full bonus mark

The weight of the rubric would lean heavily towards the story portraying racism/discrimination, with a lower weight for the effort and creativity shown. The bonus is for work that far exceeds my expectations, and stands head and shoulders above the work of their peers. Ive included a painting I made when I was in high school of a scene from a future Redwall book: The Taggerung. The Taggerung centers around an otter who was raised by vermin, and because of this was discriminated against by the woodland creatures, even though in his heart he was always a goodbeast.
