com Subject: Re: [Stewart-L] Recent mails from Rob Erik Schoenborn bob has asked me to put his interim reply to marks post on the list. He feels that this subject is very important. 1) tradition cannot be copyright - no-one can own the faery tradition or the kabbalah, for example, In this sense everyone is free to work with any tradition in any way they choose. Please note that josephine and I do not call our work a ``tradition ` and I have carefully avoided this in all my books and workshops. My work is often based on tradition (s), as is spiritual and magical work, but it is not a `tradition` in itself. Most of it is new and that is why we are doing it. 2) Teachings are often but not always copyright. in workshops I always state clearly that we are working with contemporary ( new) methods of changing consciousness, many of which have been developed especially for our work. Thus Josephine and I have a strict responsibility concerning who uses these methods/ teachings to teach others. I worked from 1969 to 1988 before I began teaching workshops and although many of the techniques were developed in the late 70`s and early 80`s in the UK, many more were developed in the last 5yrs by Josephine and myself in the USA. Thus I feel it is appropriate to exercise a measure of control over this work which we have developed - these are modern teaching techniques and are therefore copyright. ( Josephine has already talked about ethics and responsibility ) 3) copyright. Most people that come to our workshops have read one or more of my books : these are original books created specially to communicate ways of changing consciousness. They are modern works, and are not traditional. thus i am able to give or withold permission for anyone to use, teach or quote my work. This is normal, all authors have this right, and it comes from legal protections for all authors worldwide. The same applys to an authors or teachers name and work : it is copyright and cannot be used without permission. So while i would never claim to own a tradition, I do claim to own my original work which I have devoted most of my life to developing both in writing over 20 yrs and in teaching over the last 11 yrs. This is no different from any other writer or teacher or any other creative artist in any public/published field of work. I hope this clarifies my position, which I feel to be in keeping with all the national and social laws of our culture and which I do not consider to be unusual or overly demanding. RJS
