Born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15th, 1929, King graduated from Boston University in 1954 and became a clergyman in the city of Montgomery. Just two years later, he helped lead the famous bus boycott in that city, unifying 50,000 African Americans in refusal to use the public transportation system for 385 days, and finally inspiring the United States Supreme Court to rule discrimination on the part of public transportation to be illegal. He married his wife, Coretta Scott, in 1953 and they had four children. In 1963, King led the famous March on Washington, a non-violent protest against racial inequality that mobilized more than 200,000 African Americans and culminated in his I Have a Dream speech. Finally, Martin Luther King was assassinated while speaking on behalf of a workers strike in Tennessee. Both the United States and the United Nations have designated days of commemoration for Dr. Martin Luther King and his contributions to peace and human rights.
