Ethnic Makeup Within the population of mainland Chinas 31 provinces, autonomous regions, individual municipalities, and military personnel, there are 1,159,400,000 Han Chinese, totaling 91.59% of the nation; and 106,430,000 minority citizens, for a total of 8.41%. Compared to the similar 1990 Fourth National Census, the Han population has increased by 116,920,000 people, growing 11.22%; and the aggregate minority population has increased by 15,230,000 people, an addition of 16.70%. 7. Educational Data Within the population of mainland Chinas 31 provinces, autonomous regions, individual municipalities, and military personnel, 45,710,000 people were accepted to college (including postgraduates students); 141,090,000 people entered high school (including ); 429,890,000 people entered junior high; and 451,910,000 started primary school (the above statistics comprise both graduates and students still in school). Compared to the 1990 Fourth National Census, every 100,000 people receiving education changed in the following ways: those with college degrees went from 1422 people to 3611 people; those with high school diplomas increased from 8039 to 11146 people; those who passed junior high went from 23344 to 33961 people; and those at the primary school level went from 37057 to 35701 people. The illiterate population (those 15 years or above who still havent learned to read or the very young) is at 85,070,000 people, which when compared with the 1990 Fourth National Census, the illiteracy rate fell from 15.88% to 6.72%, a drop of 9.16 percentage points. 8. Urban/Rural Data Within the population of mainland Chinas 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and individual municipalities, 455,940,000 people live in cities and towns, making up 36.09% of the total population; whereas 807,390,000 people live in rural areas, for 63.91% of the whole nation.
