1. Maryland was founded as a refuge for Roman Catholics and became know for religious freedom. 2. Carolina was a large colony that eventually was divided to form North Carolina and South Carolina. 3. Georgia was formed from the southern one-third of the Carolina Colony and was settled be debtors from England. 4. Virginia continued to grow, and its new capital, Williamsburg, became an important colonial city.

Big Idea: Southern plantations changed as plantation owners added more and more workers.
Key Vocabulary: planter another name for plantation owners tidewater low-lying land along a coast broker a person who is paid to buy and sell for someone else.
overseer- hired by slave owners to watch the field slaves as they worked and punish them if they did not work hard.
Important Points:
1. Plantations grew as planters cleared land to grow more cash crops. 2. As plantations grew, planters needed additional workers, such as indentured servants and slaves, to farm the land. 3. Enslaved Africans brought to work on plantations were given little freedom and rights. 4. Many southern planters were active in public service and became colonial leaders.
