1. Read the passage given below and answer the question that follow: 5 marks Illiteracy makes a person enemy of mankind. It is like a curse on his life, on his family and on his nation because the work of illiteracy is that of an inhibitor. This is to say, the more the illiterate people of the country, the harder it will be for the country to develop. We can clarify this fact with an example. America whose illiteracy rate is below 5 per cent and Canada whose illiteracy rate is around 8 per cent are developed countries, whereas countries like Turkey and Iran with illiteracy rates of 61 per cent 43 percent respectively are underdeveloped countries. Uneducated population is unskilled and less productive. It is a fact that it is always tougher and more expensive to train illiterate people than educated ones. Due to ignorance and lack of rational thinking, they are easily deceived by the intermediaries and employers. Again, taking an example of the glittering diamond industry of Surat, the labourers who cut and polish diamonds are largely betrayed just because 95 per cent of them are uneducated and the diamond companies take fullest advantage of it. They enforce on them overtime and low wages. Questions: 1. What feelings dominate an illiterate person? 2. Why is illiteracy considered curse? 3. What is the rate of illiteracy in America? 4. Why are the labourers betrayed in the diamond industry of Surat? 5. What is the noun form of productive? 2. Read the given passage and answer the questions that follow: 5 marks Government bodies run more than 90 per cent of the nations primary schools and most of them are non-performing institutions. The non-performance of these schools is the main reason why majority of their students complete four or five years of education and do not acquire the literacy and numeracy skills expected after the first two years of schooling. What is the impact of our non-performing primary schools on our students, the educational system and the country as a whole? It is estimated the 20 million children i.e. , 25 percent of children in the primary school going age group, 6-10 years are not in school. On the literacy front, we will be adding millions of literates or virtual literates from these primary school every year. Since 40 percent of our population is illiterate, literacy will remain with us well into the next decades. About 80 percent of our middle schools standards V-VIII or VI-VIII are run by government bodies. These schools are likely to be as unaccountable and non- performing as their primary counterparts. Remedial work is rarely done to srenthen the week learning level of more than
