The ILS 3 Step Coach method is used to conduct world class coaching sessions or is easily adapted for meetings both formal and informal and for both individuals and groups. Definitions of the 3 Steps: 1. STEP 1- focus of step one is CONTRACTING Every coached conversation starts by focusing on finding, excavating and polishing up, a clear FOCUS or CONTRACT, which is coaching jargon for the 'take-away' or achievable outcome for the duration of the coaching session or meeting.
? solid contract is established, step 1 is not complete. Until a ? A coach should not move to step 2 until a coachable contract is clearly defined and

passes the 4 contract checks. Step 1 includes rapport building, excavating a theme/goal and contract, reframing if needed, deepening the value of the goal or contract, detailed evidence for the contract, measures, levels of importance and re-contracting if needed. FORMAL USE: The first 5 15 minutes of a coaching session. INFORMAL USE: Setting an agenda item, clarification of a discussion's objective, focusing on an agreed outcome. 2. STEP 2 - focus of step one is SOLUTIONS With a clear contract established, step 2 comprises the bulk of the coaching conversation. This is where questions and processes are used to unpack plans, strategies and solutions that will enable the coachee to attain the contract and make steps towards his or her long term goal.
? In addition, step 2 allows for obstacle work (contingency planning). ? A coach either uses standard coaching questions to draw out a solid step 2, OR

offers the coachee exercises and brainstorming games to help with the creative thinking process. FORMAL USE: after clear contracting, the coach and coachee endeavour to deliver on the contract and its evidence during step 2. INFORMAL USE: Any conversation can benefit from a solution orientation, use step 2 methods to unpack plans, to deepen strategy, to focus on solving problems and overcoming obstacles. 3. STEP 3 - focus of step one is ACTIONS The final step wraps up the session with a few clear next steps or short term actions. A top coach also works to deepen a coachees commitment to their tasks and focus areas. Time lines are firmed up and details on the next actions confirmed. Acknowledgement and positive feedback ends the session on a positive motivating note. FORMAL USE: narrow down next short term actions and end upbeat. INFORMAL USE: direct others and motivate them to be committed to action and drive momentum towards a goal.
