Write a paper answering the following questions in 150 to 350 words each: What has been the status of women in the United States throughout history?

The status of women throughout history has been they are considered below men. In society, they are more often given the position of a lower paying job than a man. A woman can have a college degree in a certain line of work and apply for the position, not get the position, but a man the same age as the woman without a college degree can get that position with no questions asked. That old saying A womans place is in the kitchen, sad to say but many groups and even religions still believe that. Sometimes in areas women are kept from the outside world to take care of the home and have children. A woman can do a job just as good as a man if not better in many cases. As the years have gone on, many women are

successful as men; they have their own companies that are here in America as well as overseas.
What is the status of women in the U.S. today?

Back in the 1960s a little girl by the name of Peggy Kerr; she wanted to become a lawyer when she grew up. As she was growing up she never said anything about wanting to go into this line of work because girls didnt want to be lawyers. She thought that she would have to deal with people disapproving of her dream. Peggy Kerr is now a top lawyer at Skadden, Arps in New York City. Meredith Vieria who has been on TV now for over 12 years, was told by an executive that it was best if she didnt go to the Middle East, suggesting she couldnt take care of herself while she was there. She has dealt with being a minority in a big company; they still believe that a woman cannot do as well as a man in that line of work. She has showed them many times that she is able to do their job and then some.

What are some examples of concepts or constructions of masculinity and femininity that you see in society and in media?

In the media, masculine figures appear military, firefighters, and/or police officers, its also shown to give the idea that men are not to have emotion and not care about how women feel. They try and come across as people who do not care that much about their physical appearance. A man sitting back watching football and drinking on the couch, while his wife is in the kitchen cooking and being yelled at because she is not cooking quick enough. Feminine in the media is coming across as a skinny, big breasted, and a firm body. Most often these types of things are found in commercials for Victoria Secrets and other lingerie companies. These commercials give the public a view that women should be a certain size and do certain things. All of these things mentioned are stereotypical

but that is the entire purpose of the media; to confuse the public with lies and confuse them with what these things should be. These same people go home and raise their children with the same views.
Historically, what has been the social status of GLBT people?

The LGBT communities have been mainly invisible in the media until someone in that community is murdered. In the bible, Yahweh speaks of this lifestyle as a sin, and a lot of times they will hide in plain sight because they know how they are living are a sin. Since the murders of two people in the 1990s, the civil rights movements have come in full swing for these people. The most commonly stated goal for the LGBT community has been social equality. They say because they live this lifestyle they are unable to find jobs because employers are ashamed to have them working for their company unless in some cases the owner of the company is gay themselves. Movements today are made up of political activists, cultural diversity and lobbyists. They are considered a minority group within America, and during the 1970s and 1980s, within the group branch to individual classes, lesbians (woman), gay (men), bisexual (men and women), and transgender (male to female, female to male).
What is the status of GLBT people in the U.S. today?

Since 2008 when Barrack Obama took office the LGBT communities have made their presence more known because Obama supports the community. He made a speech letting the public know that they were going to pass laws protecting them from violence. He was going to direct all agencies on home land and abroad that he wanted to ensure the protection of the people in the LGBT community. With

Obama passing these laws that is making the LGBT community immune to being convicted of hate crimes that they commit on others. They commit the same crimes as those who are straight, but are not punished the same as straight people. Strengthening the Departments personnel and consular policies, the Secretary extended the range of legally available benefits and allowances to same-sex domestic partners of foreign service staff serving abroad. The United States also incorporated gender identity into federal equal employment opportunity policies in 2010.Protecting LGBT refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants through a protection strategy developed with other U.S. Government agencies, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and NGOs. (Obama, 2011)

What are some social and political issues relevant to women and GLBT people in the U.S.?

Many issues that are relevant to this are equal pay for everyone including the LGBT community. In the state of Missouri Womens Voices joined another group to raise the states minimum wage from $7.25 to $8.25, but did not get enough signatures to be put on the 2012 ballot. Since this movement began the State Department has launched a $30 million Equality Fund to provide public and private resources to the LGBT community in the United States and around the world. Patel said the issue is more important than ever, citing the gap in gender equality in many countries as reported by the World Economic Forum, a group promoting womens leadership. (Patel, 2011) Patel is now racing against the clock to solidify the gains from the administration. She wants to address peace

and security for women around the world and prevent violence and sexual violence against women. Something should be announced in the near future concerning this situation.
